Shakesbeere (52), Massachusetts, USA Dec 15, 2008 Pours very dark and thick; aroma of coffee and chocolate. A roasted and slightly bitter taste. Hints of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and coffee - all sufficiently balanced. Leaves a lingering taste of hops. All-in-all, an excellent brew. VTHopHead (895), Barre, Vermont, USA Dec 14, 2008 Bottle - Poured a very black in color with a small tan head that settled to a thin brown rim around the top of the beer. A small amount of lacing on the glass. Aroma is strong of hops, espresso and is slightly smoky. Flavor is hoppy and quite bitter with plenty of coffee, darly roasted malts and some chocolate. Thick and chewy. Alcohol flavor or bite not apparent, but it warms the tummy nicely. Finish is all about the hops and their bitterness... lingering. This is a really good beer... too bad this is the only one that I have... for now. MOboy (446), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Dec 9, 2008 Pours a deep, deep ruby only discernable with a Maglight shining through the glass. a full, tan foam works its way out of the viscous liquid. Smells of hops, coffee, dark chocolate, tar. Smoked bacon, dark chocolates, definate hop resins and big roast all make this an enjoyable Imp St that will age very well. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Dec 9, 2008 Updated: Jul 31, 2009Bottle, I think pretty young. Pours black with light tan head. Smooth, but not quite as pretty as an Expedition pour. Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, lactose, nuts, caramel are all part of the experience. A wonderfully balanced Imperial Stout. Sweet, roasty, bitter, and hoppy. Each is a feature of this beer, but none is dominant. I will definitely pick up another six or so and age a few... Fin (3376), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Dec 5, 2008 Cask conditioned at The Grey Lodge Pub, Philadelphia in the company of Loz, Casey and Traci on Fins fortieth Birthday 16-11-08. Poured black with light beige head. Crikey this was so smooth, really smooth but also very hoppy. Light coffee floods through, there is a creamy mouthfeel to this. Wonderful stuff. Had to rush the rating as we had to get the metro back into town, but marvellous stuff. nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Dec 4, 2008 Thanks to styles for the aged bottle from 2003. Pours jet black with a minor ring of brown foam around the outside of the glass. Smells of powdered cocoa, mild coffee, vanilla, and alcohol. Dark fruits, walnut, and caramel are also detectable in the flavor. Betters as it warms. Worthy of sipping and celebrating with. guyinchicago (516), marengo, Illinois, USA Nov 29, 2008 Updated: Mar 20, 2009To be fair I had this one right after bells expedition on thanksgiving day hence the lower score. black meduim body thin head far more lighter than the big boys in taste and appearence sbroome (69), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Nov 28, 2008 A fantastic and simple stout. 9.1% and tastes it, not too weak, not too strong. It’s inky black with mild tan head. Nose is burnt roasts and nutty with a slight smokiness. Mouthfeel is oily and thick and stands out as a traditional imperial stout. Not as overwhelming as Bell’s amazing Expedition Stout, but very similar. More please.
