doogie (24), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 2, 2008 Pours Dark! with an off-white head. Aroma of roasty malt. The first flavor is a surprise of kickin’ hops - I say surprise because I was expecting a rich sweet malty flavor following the aroma. Finishes with another blast of biter hops. If you’re a hop person, this could be the Stout for you. Not my "cup of tea". Snoop59 (69), Penn Run, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 1, 2008 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Pours jet black with a creamy light brown head that leaves excellent lacing on the snifter. The aroma is of sweet malt with a roasted barley character, hints of coffee and a wonderful hoppiness. The initial flavor is of moderate roasted, malty sweetness rolling into a chocolate and coffee taste. The finish is lightly bitter and quite long. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation. Superb Imperial Stout. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 28, 2008 Updated: Jul 12, 200912 oz. into sniffer. Oil black pour with a "Creamy beige" head that lingers and laces. Aroma is rich and chocolaty with some molasses, vanilla, cherries, raisins, and a faint and pleasant hop bitterness. Delicious rich flavor that sin;t quite as sweet as the aroma - smokey bitter molasses and coffee. The flavor seems a bit off to me - really really bitter with an almost dusty linger. I’m curious to see how the other 5 develop in the cellar. Thinner than I a great Impy IMO. Overall: this didn’t stand up to my high expectations but it is still undoubtedly great and probably the most bitter impy I have ever had.
[RE-RATE} I would give it a 3.7. Good, but imperial stouts arent really my thing these days. Good, but a bit astringent and oxydized. The aroma is more smooth and creamy and balanced than the flavor. Still pretty good though. Looks great though. Medium to heavy body with minimal carbonation. I need to drink the rest up though before they all get way too oxydized.
(another RE-RATE) same batch again, with well over a year on them. Starting to get soyish on the nose, and still not my favorite, but pleasant for IMPY lovers for sure. The coffee quality is really shinning through on the flavor now. mrw1zard (54), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Jun 23, 2008 Very nice stout. Lots of malt/chocolate/oak taste to this. Very bitter. Definitely not a session brew - haha. Great after dinner brew. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 23, 2008 The aroma is almost meaty with coffee, burnt malt, chocolate, cream, and oak. The appearance is deep dark brown with a small head. The flavor is like the aroma and very bitter. The palate is smooth and thick. I almost like it. gringo332 (235), Richardson, Texas, USA Jun 22, 2008 Delicious, but wow! That hop knocks you back on the first bite. I don’t think I’ll be having more than one of these very often-- er, ever. Maybe a bit hot out this week for this particular beer, but I’m glad I got a case of ’em.
abcfan (244), New Jersey, USA Jun 22, 2008 I’ve been putting this one off for a while, but glad I finally bought it. Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma of hops, coffee and alcohol. Very smooth, creamy mouthfeel with a nice roasted coffee taste. Slightly bitter finish with a slight alcohol finish. inkubus27 (237), Highland, Indiana, USA Jun 18, 2008 Way better than I expected. The amount of complexity between the heavy handed hopping and roasted malts meld really well and leave a surprisingly clean palate. The aroma of this beer is just as complex, starting off with a mild hop aroma that’s quickly overwhelmed by the massive amounts of roasted malts. Initially I was kindof upset I had to buy a whole six pack just to try this, but after drinking it, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. To me this is just a notch below expedition, simply because of the quality, value and availability.
