HonkeyBra (1258), Lemont, Illinois, USA May 8, 2008 Pours dark black with a nice tan head. The aroma is mostly malt and a lot of hops, though there is some dark fruit and maybe a hint of coffee in there. Nice flavor, balanced between the roasted malt and hops. There is also chocolate and coffee in there. Thick mouthfeel, and the alcohol is very well-hidden. beckstein (4), USA does not count May 7, 2008 What a great example of the style. Had this in the bottle. Pours with a great lingering head. Very dark allowing no light to pass through - not even on the edges of the glass. The beer is a meal. Very roasty taste. Thick. Hops are well balanced and not overwhelming. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 6, 2008 Pours a dark black with a tan head. Nice thicker mouthfeel. Nice roasted flavor, some coffee and chocolate. Hides the 9.1% pretty well, it seems like a normal Stout. Very good. I need to get some more. keoki182 (305), West Bend, Wisconsin, USA May 5, 2008 Bottle form during a meal at Old Chicago. I stupidly ordered this beer while at a restaurant. The accompanying meal was a pepperoni/jalapeno/ricotta stuffed calzone with marinara sauce. That’s what happens when a beer nerd finds a new beer while in an unbecoming environment. I had to try it, though I knew full well I was setting myself up for minor disappointment. Storm King had nice roasted cocoa aroma, I could definitely smell the bittering hops as well. The mouthfeel was creamy thick...the flavor was pretty bitter for a stout but with nice roast/smoky undertones. I could feel the weight of the beer as it supported the high abv. I would really love to sample this one again under better circumstances. It was very tasty and a high quality brew even when gorging on Italian chain food, but I’d like to sit down with a snifter of it and a good book in front of a crackling fire. jbuzz (658), South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 5, 2008 Very thick solid head. Heavy after taste chocolate and malt flavors well balanced and fantastic dark color. lowgun1212 (75), Montclair, New Jersey, USA May 3, 2008 deep opaque brown. slick thin head. bright but smooth malt nose. some dates in it. taste explodes for a stout but the mouth is the biggest virtue for me. maybe too bitter/sour at the the finish?? not a session beer thats for sure. substitute for a meal, mayhaps! deepsouth (23), biloxi, Mississippi, USA May 2, 2008 the beer glugged into my tremens tulip. the beer is opaque black with a nice brownish head that fades pretty quickly leaving a tan ring around the glass.
this beer smells fantastic. i smell chocolate, cocoa, espresso and a bit roasty.
the taste stands up to the smell as well. the alcohol seems to be in the taste and the burn. noticeable in taste, but not the smell is HOPS??? not the typical stout i’m used to drinking. a pleasant surprise actually. as the beer warms, the hops seem to mellow a bit and the beer sweetens. superb.
the mouthfeel is full and carbonated. chewy but not sticky. i wish it were a tad thicker. (perhaps as it warms) the beer does indeed thicken as it warms.
this is a fine imperial stout that i’m glad i have another of and will seek out in the future.
SirSlarty (68), Reading, Pennsylvania, USA May 1, 2008 Anise and coffee smell with a black as the ace of spades color and mahogany smokey head. Hops overlaod on the palate but it fades quickly into the chocolate and malt flavors. Very good!
