mcox90 (617), Wilton, USA Mar 29, 2008 12 oz bottle served in a snifter. Pours black with a small tan head. Nose of oak wood, molasses, & heavy malt . Mouthfeel is heavy & creamy with very low carbonation. Heavy malt presence dominates flavor as well as the usual stout charcteristics of molasses, toffee, & unsweetened chocolate. Kind of a woody background too. Bit of a hop presence in the finish leaving you a slight bitter aftertaste. EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Mar 29, 2008 Black pour with a tan head. Really nice aroma. Intense, almost winelike with malt and oak and some sweet fruit. Woody malt flavor. Slightly sweet at the start, giving way to alcohol on the end. Very complex flavor - there’s a lot going on - hops, and grain. Very good. santos999 (318), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 28, 2008 Bottled: 01/23/08. A staple beer in my cellar, although lately quality seems to have declined. Pours a jet black with a dark beige head. Strong roasty, coffee notes with chocolate, espresso, and a slight hint of spoiled milk, but not in an unpleasant way. Super creamy, vinous notes at first, with heaps of chocolate, coffee, toffee, bitterness, roasted malts throughout. Long, mouth puckering bitter finish. rman18 (200), South Amboy, New Jersey, USA Mar 27, 2008 Updated: Apr 2, 2008What can I say, this beer is nearly perfect. The aroma is absolutely beautiful. The appearance only loses a point because the head was a little smaller than I like, but it did last 3/4 of the way down the glass. (I used a pint glass, didn’t have a Snifter handy). The flavor is great, but not to be chugged - you’ll taste the liquor if you do. The palate can’t be better. Overall the best beer I’ve had so far. amishcaravan (237), Winona, Minnesota, USA Mar 25, 2008 scent is of some hops and malts. taste is more hoppy than i expected, but was a very pleasent suprise. there is also a fair amount of malt and chocolate. finish is very smooth with a very nice lasting taste is hops and malts. I would certainly purchase this again. AMN (127), Dublin, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 25, 2008 Intriguing mix of hops and malts. The initial taste was much more bitter than I expected, but the chocolate/roast flavor eventually comes through. The hops dominate the aroma as well. Smells a little boozy, but the alcohol is pretty well-hidden. Definitely the best I’ve had from Victory. BarleyBob (18), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 23, 2008 Pours a deep black color, with a thick, light brown head which lasts and lasts. The aroma is wonderful, but the taste is even better, with chocolate, coffee, toffee, and caramel notes. But what really makes this an exceptional brew is the balance between the malt flavors and the hops. It is so tasty and so well balanced that you really don’t even notice the 9% alcohol--so be careful. This has quickly become one of my favorite beers. docsteigs (139), USA Mar 23, 2008 Updated: Mar 28, 2008Pours dark black, pretty dark beige head; smells of coffee, chocolate predominate; tastes rich, smooth, nice malty balance; another victory from Victory!; bottle says good thru 2012!
