imadeadguy (378), back in NJ!, New Jersey, USA Feb 29, 2008 Updated: Feb 24, 20091999 VintageRe-rate- Wow! This one has held up real well. Carbo still present. Flavors have mellowed out completely. Roasted malt, chocolate, and a bit of soy sauce are present. I thought this one was better when cold rather then warming. Awesome brew if you can find it. 2007 Vintage Poured pitch black with little to no head. Aroma of roasted malt and plum. Flavor is mostly malt and coffee. Smooth finish and alcohol is hidden well. I think it lacks a bit of flavor. If this one sits for a while it would be much better. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Feb 28, 2008 Pours an oily dark brown with a decent tan head that dissipates quickly, some lacing. The aroma was roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit and a bit of hops. The flavor is roasted malt, smoke, coffee with a nicely hopped short finish. Medium bodied with a velvety mouthfeel. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 25, 2008 Well that flying V tap is a welcome sight anywhere, and having this is worth the price. I dont know about the 100 rating, but its up there with the best. Not quite as thick and sticky as some of the other big boys, but its got all the taste. I would say its a little more smooth, not quite as hoppy or roasted. mystiksc (46), los angeles, California, USA Feb 24, 2008 Pours pitch black. Darker than night. Coffee or even an espresso like taste on the palate. Very roasty. Then comes the hints of caramel, chocolate, and slight notes of hops. Reminds me of North Coast Old Rasputin except I didn’t detect the hints of black licorice. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bottle. Thick black pour, small head that sits there for the whole beer. Excellent burnt aroma. Warm mouthfeel, nice flavor of roast nuts and coffee. Not a particularly strong or complex flavor for the style, but good. Somewhat bubbly finish with some sourness. A good beer, but not overwhelmingly good for this style. brianprentiss (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 22, 2008 Pours black as tar with little head. The alcohol is well hidden, 9% and you can barely taste it.
I can’t spot the hops as much as others have, the malts are overpowering. The hops are there but a bit hidden.
This is an intense and complex beer. Very yummy roasted espresso beans liquified for your enjoyment. Amazing beer, not many better than this one. jujubeast6000 (772), Houston, Texas, USA Feb 19, 2008 (Bottle @ FS, Hou): Pours a black color body, tannish head, average. Coffee apoma, some Belgian sugar. Not very strong. Coffee, malty taste, some nuts. Some alcohol on the back of the palate. Hoppy bitterness present. Pretty easy to drink. More alcohol bite as it warms up, stronger coffee. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Feb 18, 2008 Updated: Feb 21, 2008Pours nearly black, with a thick one-finger head. Looks delicious. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee and hops. Very well balanced. Flavor of chocolate and toffee. The hops subtly present and take over toward the back. Very full mouthfeel. This beer lasts. I was the worried the hops would dominate, but they blend in beautifully. This is one imperial stout that more than lives up to its reputation. Great beer!
