slimchill (773), Austin, Texas, USA Jan 24, 2008 Bottle. Light chocolate and coffee aromas permeate a too-cold pour, a touch of grapefruit hop and more malt sweetness show up as it warms. Black with a thin haze of a brown head that sticks to the sides and bubbles as the glass bounces. The flavor is chocolate and coffee with a smoke background, but in such perfect balance. The finish is hop-heavy bringing a bitterness that punctuates the sweet notes and at the same time promises that this will grow in complexity with some aging. Palate is robust and slightly dry in the finish. LeMunche (66), Orland Park, Illinois, USA Jan 23, 2008 Updated: Mar 20, 2008This is a solid IMP stout. Can really taste the hops. I tend to prefer the stouts where hops don’t dominate. They seem more balanced to me. afireinside96 (807), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 22, 2008 bottle. this may be the deepest black I have ever seen a beer achieve. smells of bitter chocolate, campfire, and a hint of bourbon. taste is similar with a good bit of smokiness to it. nice hop finish to round out the experience. a bit of alcohol warmth emerges mid-glass. quite enjoyable, but definitely not a session beer. fishingnet (1045), Brandon, Florida, USA Jan 22, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a dense one finger lasting tan head that leaves great lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, burnt caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit, and a hint of licorice. Taste is the same as aroma. Full creamy mouthfeel with a moderate to strong amount of bitterness and very well hidden alcohol. A very tasty Imperial Stout. tunneler (112), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 21, 2008 pours black with a medium brown head which quickly dissipated. I liked the hint of anise or licorice, but didn’t care for the alcohol poking through about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way in. agl108 (503), Manayunk, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 19, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Poured black with brown head that left only the slightest of lacing. Roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate flavor. Thinner body than I anticipated. blipp (1631), Newark, New Jersey, USA Jan 19, 2008 Updated: Sep 20, 2009Another re-rate. Just tried this fresh from a cask and I could not believe how hoppy it was. Both bottles I tried previously must have been at least 6 months old, probably older. A completely different beer fresh.
ReRate: Bottle. Pours almost black with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma with coffee and a touch of smoke. Medium/full body. Flavor is primarily roasted malt with smoke, burnt wood and bitter coffee. Lingering bitterness of dark chocolate and floral hops. Very drinkable.
Original Rating: 8/5/9/5/18 4.5 Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA Jan 18, 2008 This is everything that I thought it was going to be. Dark, rich, creamy, and delicious!
Absolutely jet black pour, huge 3 inch head, shelves of lacing down the glass.
Smells of chocolate and malt and coffee and also a touch of hops as well. Very pleasant.
Doesn’t disappoint in the taste department either. Dark and creamy, the chocolate and coffee give way to a nice hoppiness midway and the aftertaste is pure dark roasted chocolate.
Man, this is one of the best stouts that I’ve ever had. I loved everything about it.
