ChrisThomson (375), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 22, 2009 Bottle. Nice beer. Pours pure black with small tan head. Taste of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, with nice sweetness. Very good and nice hoppy finish. gunnar (486), Sandnes, Norway Aug 18, 2009 Updated: Aug 19, 200912 oz bottle. Pours pitch black, with a generous creamy tan head. Strong roasted malts, spicy hops and dark chocolate makes up the aroma pot. When the beer pours into my mouth, its like a heavenly elixir, oily and tasteful, strong roasted coffee, the hops shines thru at the end, this is hoppy in a nice way. Also hints of liquorize here, which always make my day. BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA Aug 17, 2009 12oz bottle purchased at the liquor store in Tyngsborro, Mass. Pours an opaque pitch black body with nearly an inch of tan head. Chocolate, caramel, some ash, booze, brown sugar, and date all characterize the aroma. Caramel, chocolate, burnt malt, hints of citrussy hops all comprise the flavor, with a dry burnt astringency dominating the finish and aftertaste. Rich full mouth-feel with moderate carbonation. While this one is more of a sipper (as it should be), it goes down quite easily and quickly. In my opinion, the burnt character could afford to be scaled back a bit. Otherwise, I have no complaints, and this is quite a solid RIS. TreborWhip (67), Reading, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 15, 2009 Bottle poured into a Sam Adams Sensory glass produced a medium brown head with black body. A true stout as others have mentioned. I bit to hoppy for my taste but if you like an ale that is on the bitter side, this one is for you. CheersBabe (62), USA Aug 14, 2009 This is a true stout. Smells of hops, malt, coffee, and a hint of chocolate. Appearance is black and opaque. Flavor may be too bold for some but those who really look for heavy flavor will enjoy this. Palate is full and stays on your tongue after you swallow it. Overall, excellent, excellent beer. Tdevil (13), Feetood, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 11, 2009 Updated: Aug 12, 2009I hate to break a trend of good ratings, and I really wanted to like this one. I love stouts, I love the burnt flavor and I love the mouthfeel. But this one didn’t even taste like a stout at all. Storm King is a near carbon copy of Victory’s own Old Horizontal barleywine. Pours black with nearly no head. The prickly carbonation and heavy alcohol content seems to enhance the bitterness to the point which it makes it really quite difficult to drink. Oily texture makes you endure a VERY long-lasting bitter aftertaste. A hint of sour and bitter almost licorice aftertaste lingered in my mouth two full hours after drinking, and every time I took a sip of water to wash down the taste it seemed to re-activate.
I bought a single bottle and am forever grateful I did, as I will never purchase an entire case. MoritzF (4856), Bochum, Germany Aug 11, 2009 (35.5cl bottle) Coal-black coloured hue with a big and firm dark brown foamy head. Sweet and strong roasted malty aroma with dark and milky chocolate, but most of all fruity and slightly piney hoppy notes. Burnt bitter flavour with a light balancing malty sweetness, full bodied with a smooth well-carbonated mouthfeel. Dry roast-malty and slightly vinous-fruity taste with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, herbs and alcohol that cannot be hidden; burnt bitter and sweet alcoholic finish. Tasty but not perfectly balanced Imperial Stout (11.VIII.09). mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 11, 2009 [2302-20090704] 12floz bottle. Roasty toasted grains aroma. Dark brown black body with a quick foamy light brown head. Roasted plum grains flavour has lots of roast. Full body. Nice brew, drinkable.
