Commercial Description:
With a huge, Pacific Northwest hop aroma & character upfront, Storm King subsides into massive, roast malt complexity. More flavor than mere words can adequately describe. Rich and substantial, it will warm your heart.

I hate to break a trend of good ratings, and I really wanted to like this one. I love stouts, I love the burnt flavor and I love the mouthfeel. But this one didn’t even taste like a stout at all. Storm King is a near carbon copy of Victory’s own Old Horizontal barleywine. Pours black with nearly no head. The prickly carbonation and heavy alcohol content seems to enhance the bitterness to the point which it makes it really quite difficult to drink. Oily texture makes you endure a VERY long-lasting bitter aftertaste. A hint of sour and bitter almost licorice aftertaste lingered in my mouth two full hours after drinking, and every time I took a sip of water to wash down the taste it seemed to re-activate. I bought a single bottle and am forever grateful I did, as I will never purchase an entire case.

(35.5cl bottle) Coal-black coloured hue with a big and firm dark brown foamy head. Sweet and strong roasted malty aroma with dark and milky chocolate, but most of all fruity and slightly piney hoppy notes. Burnt bitter flavour with a light balancing malty sweetness, full bodied with a smooth well-carbonated mouthfeel. Dry roast-malty and slightly vinous-fruity taste with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, herbs and alcohol that cannot be hidden; burnt bitter and sweet alcoholic finish. Tasty but not perfectly balanced Imperial Stout (11.VIII.09).

Black with a thick tan head. Aroma is very hoppy with a bit of caramel sweetness. Taste is coffee, bitter, chocolate. Medium body, would have liked it a bit thicker. More hops than I expected but very good.

Delicious aroma combines with a hoppy and malty taste of espresso and roasted barley. Well balanced with a good finish. Overall very good beer.

Bottle. Pours like oil dark and thick with a medium tan head. Aroma of chocolate and malt. Flavor is earthy with hints of roasted barley and a very delicate sweetness. Leaves a long hoppy finish. Very nicely balanced and easy to drink with no taste of alcohol. Wonderful!

[Bottle] Sample notes from January 2009. Pours an inky black color with a large amount of light brown head. Strong aroma of burnt coffee and caramel. More hop in the nose than I expected as well. The thick liquid reveals a bitter chocolate and espresso flavoring. More subtle notes include plum and a small hop bite. About what I expected with the mouthfeel. Rather low carbonation. Quite enjoyable!
