4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle in brandy snifter. When poured it quickly develops a large brown head receding slowly leaving nice lacing along the circumference of the glass. Aroma is dominated by intense roasted malts with molasses sweetness, a hint of bitter hops and some dried fruits. Immediately warming full body engages the entire palate. Smokey roast flavors dominate with a subtle sweetness slowly replacing the initial burst of flavor. Only detractor is the lack of complexity. Memorable beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours deep brown-purple with a dark tan head.
Smoky, roasted chocolate aroma.
Taste is light ash...burned coffee, chocolate....citrus.
Slight grapefruit-peel and licorice bitter.
Hops really take over as you sip....finishes like a big, black IPA.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Enjoy by July 5th 2018. Poured into a shaker pint. $2.49 single.
Appearance: Well, itís basically pitch black -- no surprise there. The great thing about this beer is the lacing. Thereís a two finger creamy, tan head on it, but it doesnít last long... but the lacingís fantastic.
Smell: Man, I donít know. The best way for me to describe the smell is wet cardboard. That sounds absolutely awful, but itís actually... not. I figure itís the variety of hops that they use mixing with the dark malts, but I donít know how else to tell you what this beer smells like.. at FIRST. As the head slowly goes entirely away, coffee opens up, and the beers smells more like, well, a beer with a solid amount of roast. Still, Storm King never smells mouth watering.
Taste/feel: A mouth watering, almost tangy character is the first thing I notice... this beer really is chock full of hops, as many people have said. A lot of earthy character brought on by them, and that works very well with the roasted notes. Thereís a bit of alcohol flavor and warmth on the finish, but not as "hot" as many other RISís Iíve had. Pretty nice mouthfeel, as I had hoped for, given the style.
A very good beer, but not great. Honestly, I expected a lot more. This seems to be a favorite amongst craft beer drinkers. I like the addition of extra hops to make this a hoppy RIS, but the other characteristics arenít there as much as Iíd like. Yeah, it has a nice body to it, and the roastiness is pleasant, but I guess itís just not as... pungent? As I was hoping it would be. Iíd have it again, as itís a very good beer, but there are definitely better options. Still, try it for yourself to experience an unusually hoppy tasting RIS.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
An Imperial Stout which has a hoppiness not unlike an APA. The bitter aftertaste makes this stout a standout in its category. I recommend this beer only for its uniqueness. Anyone looking for a more true imperial stout flavor may want to look elsewhere. I like this beer, but I recognize that itís not what most people expect in an imperial stout.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at Victory, Downington, 27/11/13.
Finally caught up with this one to rate as had been saving my rating for the cask version.
Mid black with a good sized dirty tan head that retains well. Full glass lacing ensues.
Nose is big on roast malt, bitter dark chocolate, toffee fudge, light mineral notes, leather, treacle toffee. A good robust nose with light hop tingles in the background.
Taste comprises roast malt, liqourice, dark chocolate, hoppy tang, dark fruits, chocolate dipped raisens, light booze.
Full end of medium bodied, soft carbonation, smooth on the palate, lightly warming alcohol in the finish.
Solid impy, a touch better on cask than keg or bottles, the flavours are there from the start and donít need to be warmed up.

Best by 10DEC15 - reviewed 19NOV12 (about two years old?)
Black, light tan foam. Spots of lace. Smells of malts, oats, coffee, toasted barley and some char. Tastes like a middle of the road RIS - bitter with malt and toasted flavors with some burnt cracker. Thick body with a dry finish. Carb is tight and sharp. Fine beer for a hardcore night - tend to like my beers a bit smoother these days.

A: Pours a deep brown with limited translucency which illustrates at the edges only with tilt. Single finger, dark latte head dissipates quickly and retains a thin sheet of the same. Lacing is limited.
S: Very resinous hop nose cloaks the chocolate malts, coffee, and lightly sweet backbone. This combo allows and convinces me the beer is both ready to be consumed now, or can stand the test of time in the cellar.
T: Again, the hops are immediate in this as they were in the nose. Almost a thickened ABA. Great coffee, cocoa, black charred malts again in the backbone.
M: thicky, sticky, tacky, lip-smacky. Resonates with heavy body and moderate carbonation. Maybe a hare more spritely than I would prefer in the style, but nonetheless, above average.
D: Very good beer, I venture to say I would enjoy it even more with a year or two on it. Good beer, wish it was a little less intense on the hops up front.

Love the big bitter citrus taste from the hops. Solid taste from the roasted malts too without too much chocolate or coffee. A very strong stout.

Iím not a huge fan of hoppy stouts but the flavors work well, light grapefruity character and roasted malt chocolate coffee. Biggest gripe is with the thin mouthfeel that seems inappropriate.

Strong hop aroma, initially presents like a dipa. However, chocolate and expresso flavors finishes out the palate. Very much an America representation of a stout.
