With a huge, Pacific Northwest hop aroma & character upfront, Storm King subsides into massive, roast malt complexity. More flavor than mere words can adequately describe. Rich and substantial, it will warm your heart.

Bottle. Pours a dark brownish black colour with a massive pale brown head. The nose is a blend of super bitter hops (with notes of lemon, pine, resin and mint) and a ridiculous amount of roasted/burnt malt (coffee beans, dark choklad and some soil). Loads of acidic notes both from the hops and the malt. The flavour is of burnt malt - burnt pancakes, coffee beans, cocoa beans/really (really!) dark chocolate and burnt sugar - and very bitter hops with notes of citrus fruits, mint and resin. Some sweetness. Too much acid in the taste if you ask me. Pretty nice and round mouthfeel which (unfortunately) disappears in a cloud of bitterness. Salty finish with some peppary alcohol. There is no doubt, this is a a good beer. It’s just that I’m so effin’ tired of super hoppy imperial stouts...

(355ml bottle from Systembolaget) Pours bitch black with a dense, moderately sized pale tan head, lots of lace and bubbles working up the side of the glass. Aroma of sweet chocolate, roasted slightly bready malt, a bit of coffee, and a hoppy character that is some amalgam of citrus peel, tropical fruit and tart berry. On the palate, sweetish at first chocolate, dark fruits like dates and figs, coffee, almost cake like(?!) malt, fading into vanilla and roasty coffee with cream in the middle and then a fairly substantial dry roast/citrus fruity bitterness on the finish with a little hop bite. Aftertaste is bitter and softly astringent with a little char but lingering sweet fruity malt and a bit of orange peel to counterbalance. Medium-full and creamy mouthfeel with below average carb and little alcohol. I seem to remember this being hoppier, but the hops still have a nice bite and the malt core is rich without being cloying, good roast levels. Nice sipper on the drier side of the imperial stout spectrum. Perhaps if it were really fresh I’d see it as closer to a black IPA but this drinks like a nice hoppy stout to me still.
