wunderbier (1261), Finland Feb 20, 2004 Updated: Jul 14, 2007 Rerate, 12oz bottle, bbe 16.11.11. The pour is a dark brown, settling to a decently black hue in my Burgundy glass. Compact and creamy tan head caps the beer off. First scent has an alkaline tang, like Dutch processed cocoa. Some bitter espresso follow through along with dates and plums. A sharp, resinous bouquet feels a little at odds with the malts. Initial flavour is like that of cold espresso, with similar texture. Carbonation is decidedly low and the finish scratches with pine needles rather than slinking away with sweet and roasty notes. Overall, neither the aroma nor flavour have the impact or range as I recalled, the hops are on edge compared to the malts, the alcohol sings through in the finish and the mouthfeel is too full for the flavours it supports.
12 oz bottle, snifter. Ah, 300! I guess maybe I like this beer stuff. Roasted grain, dark chocolate and lots of espresso malt (M); pine, grapefruit hops (H); smoke, date, and light pepper aromas. The tall, creamy, deep tan head slowly slinks down into the deepest black body I can ever remember seeing. Moderately sweet, moderately bitter flavor becomes a lightly sweet, heavily bitter finish. Heavy body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Alcohol is expertly hidden behind aggressive hops. 9.1%!?! Get real! Gorgeous lacing all the way. The bottom line is: I am forever in your service, my Storm King.
Praetorian (57), Los Angeles, California, USA Oct 6, 2008 Black in color with a small, light brown head which quickly deminished. Little if any lacing. The aroma is of strong black coffee, hops, alcohol, oak and molasses. The flavor is of coffee grounds, dark fruits and oak with a strong alcohol backbone. The texture is syrupy with lively carbonation. I’d say its a wonderful stout with an aggressive and complex flavor. The only let down was the texture, otherwise, its superb. A DAMN GOOD BEER! ironchefscott (243), long beach, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 a good ris...lots of coffee flavors and roasted malt character....not as complex as some..... Jsawyer (12), , Pennsylvania, USA Oct 4, 2008 From the brewery. Deep black body with a little more than a finger of creamy head. Wonderful sweet hops up front followed by a dark chocolate malt scent. Taken in small sips its sweet and fruity, then bitter dark chocolate. Taken in larger drafts much more complexity. Still sweet and fruity but incredible roast chocolate malt, caramel, coffee, smokey. Dry finish with notable hop bitterness. Wonderful Beer. flatmatt (95), Northville, Michigan, USA Oct 4, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours black with a medium-large tan head. Dark chocolate and slightly dark fruit aromas, a bit of alcohol, and light coffee. Flavor is a pretty solid roasty coffee and chocolate, smokey, plus a distinct resinous hop presence. Good lacing down the glass. A very nice imperial stout. CaryTheDude (260), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Sep 30, 2008 Jakebra crush. Had this after a Pumking. It was so refreshing, which is a first for a Imperial Stout for me. Pretty damn good. Lots of coffee and dark chocolate, some dark fruits, and a very, very bitter finish but it’s beautiful.
