The Victory version of this ‘secret’ offering is inspired by the rich brewing heritage of the alt beers. It is a dark ale exhibiting the love of hops and mastery of malt that Victory has displayed for 10 years. Initially assertive with spicy hops, Ten Years Alt concludes ever so comfortably in rich, roasted malts and burnished hop character.

On tap at Bailey’s, pours a hazy orange amber with a medium beige head. Aroma is quite hoppy for an alt, with notes of German lager yeast, bready malt and some dry hopping. Flavour is extremely hoppy for an alt, with piney dry hopping and bready malt. Quite astringent on the finish. Well-made avant garde alt beer.

Draft at Churchkey. Clear ruby amber color, off white head with solid lacing and good retention. Aroma of burnt caramel and burnt toast. Taste is peppery burnt toffee very good example of the style.

Beer Table To Go, NYC tap: well apparently this beer is back because I had it on tap at a reputable establishment. Pours clear brown with a beige head. Aroma is malty and hoppy... Some toffee and sugar and stuff. Taste is malty and not too sweet. Hops give themselves a nice presence. I like it when altbiers do things right. This is one of them.

A great strong brew, doesn’t taste like your typical 8.5% brew. Amber color, big foaming head that leave laces on the glass. Nice spicy hop flavors as well as roasted malt character. Well balanced. One of my favorites from Victory.

I pop the cap and come back after writing an email and thier is 2 inch growth hanging from the bottle. There is huge carbonation that is chunky and heavy and puffy. When its poured into the glass the beer is very dark brillant amber color with a huge 5 finger light tan head that lasts several minutes. The peak of the head is awesome with big bublles and creaminess that makes you want to let your lips sleep on it. The lacing is great. As that huge head falls it coats the whole glass, like a film falling all the way to the body. The aroma is very malty, lots of sweetness and spice. The taste is almost very malty, reminds me of a lighter quad. There is light hops and a very nutmeg spice finish that lasts a little to long.

G: Poured into a Tom Collins glass. Bottle has an enjoy by date of May 7, 2009. A: Reddish brown with a beautiful, crisp rust-colored head. Plenty of visible carbonation. Great lacing. S: Sweet with some fruit notes. Very inviting. Caramel notes and some hops. Maybe some candied sugars. T: Absolutely lovely. All of the aroma definitely comes through and there is a good amount of complexity to this one. Excellent malt backbone with some hops coming through. Similar to many of the darker American Strong Ales that I’ve had. There are some slightly spicy notes in addition to the aforementioned aromas. M: Medium-to-full body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very nice. Some slight alcohol presence. D: Could definitely drink this all day.

12oz bottle.
Two caveats here: one, I generally don’t like the altbier style; and two, the sample I tried was 5 years old, with a note on the label to "enjoy by Aug 07 06." very cloudy, chestnut brown. Flaky yeast owigng to age.nice head, decent amount of lace. Aroma is malty, nutty, crisp hop bitterness and notes of maple syrup. Flavor: rich malt, nutty, bready, crisp assertive hop blooms at the end of the swallow. Finish: full body, rich, long bitter, sugary. Best alt I’ve ever had. I actually enjoyed it even though I usually hate the style, which has me wondering if it was done well outside of style guidelines. Other than yeast flaking, it survived its 5 years in my pantry quite admirably.
