I wasn’t expecting this, but this is a pretty cloudy lager. Medium gold with a soapy white head that fades. Chalky malt aroma is followed up my more of the same (if there’s such a thing as a malty pale lager, this is it). The hops are reserved adding just enough spiciness and bitterness to balance the beer out. Nice lager.

Had it on tap. A pretty good tasty brew. Easy to drink with mild hops. Has a nice zesty malt flavor. A nice simple beer.

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2004 Bottle: Clean light golden hue with fizzy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of herbal and floral hops, toasted bready malts, light orange zest, lemongrass, and pepper. The taste starts with a bready malt character, some undertone of citrus, and grassy tones. Detected a smooth bitterness and a hint of spice on the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth and lively, dry on finish. Overall a nicely quaffable brew but not as sharp as the best Helles.

Tap at The Brazen Head (Brooklyn): I enjoyed this more than I did Victory’s previous All-Malt (Dortmunder). This Helles is a bit milder and less hoppy. Easy drinking, with a light sweetness.

This was a really refreshing beer. The aroma was a little bready and the taste was clean and smooth. Worth a try and a great American example of the style.

(Best by Jul/30/04) The nose is very spicy almost like black pepper. The body is light and refreshing with a good bready character. The hops aptly balance out the sweetness from the malt. The finish is clean and hoppy. I feel that the finish is a little too spicy. The beer would be better if the brewers cutback on the hops. Otherwise, a good clean lager.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2008 Spicy, herbal hop notes under crisp biscuity pils malt...A dry ending is cajoled by tepid citrus fruit...A beautifully rounded body is lean enough to remain very drinkable, yet can still create satiety...

Wonderful bready aroma. Taste is very clean, sweet malt. I think it needs slightly more hops though. But this is still a very smooth, enjoyable beer. Much thanks to Springlicker for this one.

Bottled, at some nameless restaurant in suburban Philadelphia. "Say whatcha got there bud?" "Well I got two lagers, one’s a pissy macro and the other is from a fine micro brewer." "Well, how can you tell bud?" "’Cause this one says ’Victory’ on it, and it’s a ’helles’, man." "Hmm, they both taste about the same to me, sweetish, slightly malty, overcarbonated, just a little bit of hops." "But surely the Victory is much, much better made...and it’s not an evil macro, by gum!" "Yeah, I guess you’re right, send me 12 cases....sucker!"

Mild aroma of toasty, biscuity malt, yeast and lemons. Dark golden-brown with decent white head that recedes to cover. Full and malty but fairly simple. Slight sourness. Some buttery dacetyl. Short flavour profile. Oily mouthfeel. I really was hoping to get more out of this one as I generally enjoy Victory beers. Sampled with MartinT and Rastacouere. Bottle.
