3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
I’m not sure how it happened, but it seems like Munich Helles Lager (BJCP Style 1D) is suddenly a hip lager style among American breweries. Some brew it traditionally, others change it up a bit. Victory Helles Lager claims to be among the traditional camp – which it may very well be as far as recipe goes – however, it’s lacking a lot of the distinct qualities found in the style. This drinks more like a generic pale lager than any kind of niche style. It’s not flawed, and I can honestly recommend it, but it needs some improvement.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass. A six-pack cost $9.99 ($1.67 per bottle or $0.14 per ounce).
Appearance: Straw pale gold color over a crystal clear body. Carbonation is consistent. Pours to a small, bright white, soapy head that never completely dissipates but leaves no little lacing.
Smell: Pure pilsner malt. Clean, but mild. No hops.
Taste: Going by the description on the brewery’s website, it seems that this beer is brewed simply with German two-row pilsner malt. That’s fine, but there’s nothing memorable or exciting about the malt base. It definitely has the classic lager/pilsner taste of pale malt, but that’s about it. It’s clean – no DMS or diacetyl – which is also fine, but having something for the taste buds to latch onto would be nice. This is brewed with whole flower German hops, which is a vague description and an odd choice. There isn’t much in the way of perceived bitterness and just the faintest trace of Noble hop spice somewhere in the backend. That being said, there’s absolutely nothing off-putting about this palette other than its mildness.
Drinkability: When I first started drinking my glass I took a very long pull as it was remarkably refreshing and easily quaffable. At only 4.8% ABV, Victory Helles Lager has the light, sessionable body you want in a brew of this style. It’s crisp and clean with no aftertaste. There probably should be a bit more body for the weight, though. A good introductory craft lager – now only if it were available in cans instead of bottles.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle to shaker glass. Pours clear straw yellow, quick small head, no lacing or retention. Aroma is malty. Taste is sweet, subtle earthy bitterness. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, slick mouth feel. Finishes sweet. Tasting note of bread, earth, grass and herbs. Good example of the style. It’s nothing special.

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
12 Oz bottle into a mason jar. Pours macro clear with no lacing or head. No aroma. Mouthfeel is very light. Good amount of carb. Taste is pretty bland. Some sweetness. And that’s about it. I will try anything from Victory. But considering Summer love has very similar measurables to this and is WAY better. I’ll stick with that.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle in San Juan as V Lager.
Slightly hazy yellow color, small white head. Grainy malty aroma. Light to medium-bodied. Malty flavor with earthy German hops, a bit grainy. It is just another lager even it is from Victory.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours straw yellow with a thin white head with a little lacing. Aroma is of bready biscuit malts, sweet malts, light grassy hops, and some light fruits. taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a light body with a slightly watery mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, semi dry, medium-short finish. Overall, a sub par beer that is however good for the style and would be a nice lawnmower beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle into a Chimay goblet.
A: Pours a gorgeous straw color. The head isn’t much, though - not even a finger high (white shade), and retention isn’t any better (read: poor). No real lacing is left behind, either. But the body is beautiful enough to make me overlook its crappy head.
S: Honestly, I don’t get much. Maybe a hint of bready malts, and a (admittedly decent otherwise) noble hop profile. At least what’s there is quite nice - it would be a good aroma if it were stronger. As it warms up, it seems to become a little bolder.
T: There are some nice noble hops right from the start. They’re mild, but they work really well. The finish is lightly sweet. To me, this beer is more conducive to drinking than analyzing - it doesn’t have much in the way of standout qualities or bold flavors, but by gawd, it just works extremely well.
M: Quite dry and crisp. Well carbonated, too. Maybe a hair overcarbonated, but that’s a trifle. This goes down more than easily enough.
O: The aroma may not have been up to snuff, but the actual taste of the beer was. And that’s all I really care about. There’s nothing like a good lager in the right mood, and this hit that ’right mood’ extremely well.

1.4 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
12 oz bottle....yellow/straw w/ a small off white head....
-smells like a lager’
-up front sour matiness
-nothing to it
-let me rephrase...nothing great to it
-I don’t think I’m a lager fan ...this beer was a reminder of that
-its not the worst lager I’ve ever had...but wouldn’t buy again (unless they change the recipe)
-I had to drink it quickly because I didn’t care for the aftertaste of sour
