GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 23, 2006 Can shared with a bunch of folks at DougShoemaker’s Decemberfest 2006 - courtesy of Jon. Reddish-orange with a large off-white head. Aroma is big yet subtle, with a delicate balance of sweet malt, mellow spices, and a tart yeastiness. Flavour follows the aroma, with the sugary sweetness well balanced by the spice and herb characteristics, and a very nice tart/dry finish. Hides that 12% damn well. A very nice beer, and a great way to finish my session at Doug’s for another year. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Dec 16, 2006 Bottle (750ml). at Decemberfest 2006. Very bubbly amber with a large, lasting fluffy off-white head. Soft aroma, waves of spices over a bed of rich sweet malt, a hint of lactic sourness, and yeast. The taste is redolent with spices, has a thick sweet malt backbone, and moderating soft herbal hops in the finish. Solid, thick, almost syrupy body, very lively, balanced and pleasing - the finish is a little quick. Excellent - thanks for the share! - I’ll enjoy my bottle for sure. Slacks (480), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Dec 11, 2006 750ml Bottle @ Decemberfest 2006: Pumpkin in colour, decent finger width of head, good retention. Aroma of peppery spices and acidic fruits. Anise in the flavour alongside pepper and plums, but quite a heavy amount of alcohol that seemed somewhat distracting. garretjax (103), Colorado, USA Dec 8, 2006 Unfiltered amber color. Floral, fruity and candied aromas. Pear and apple flavors with a bit of a moldy damp citrus finish. Alcohol is subtle. The high gravity makes this beer more attractive than the beer itself. The golden monkey, from victory as well, is a superior beer to this offshoot. Aging may do wonders. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Dec 2, 2006 750 ml corked and caged. Very pale golden beer. Aroma is very spicy with a Unibroue-like spiciness. Sweet and spicy with a hint of sweatiness, some peach, sweet coriander and light cinnamon. A touch of bready yeast, but the malts themselves are quite lean. Wheaty spiciness and some sweet peppery character. Flavour is quite spicy. Some lingering lemon citrus and a soft palate. Nice saison. JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Dec 1, 2006 Aged one year. Aroma of fruit, spice, hops, and bread. Copper pour with large off-white head. Flavors of spice, dark fruit, yeast, bread, and alcohol. A little to much heat on this one. jrob21 (1250), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 27, 2006 Pours a dark copper/light brown color. Big yeast and bread flavors. You don’t notice the 12% until you are done and wobbling. Well balanced, slight hop bitterness in the finsh. Really nice. Beaver (587), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Nov 27, 2006 750 ml bottle, caged and corked - dated 8/10/06. Pours a golden copper with a big dense fluffy white head that retains well and laces the glass. Bottle conditioned with lots of yeasties at the bottom of the bottle.
The aroma is musty yeast, bready dough, pears, and some cola-like spices.
The flavor is sweet sugary malts, followed by some peppery yeasty spices, a little pear and apple and a bit of alcohol with a bitter almost tar-like finish. Normally I don’t care for the sweetness and alcohol, but this is well done and balanced well. The mouthfeel is medium to full and creamy with ample but not harsh carbonation. It’s a little on the syrupy side.
Overall, a well done Belgian ale.
