FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Jan 25, 2006 March 05 vintage, 750mL bottle. Murky yellow-orange with red tinges. Tall off white fluffy head. Yeasy aroma, with fruity esters. Very spicy and hot flavor, clove/pineapple/fig/raisin. Alcohol heat and a lingering sweetness brace the spiciness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium heavy, very hot. atomcow1 (13), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Jan 21, 2006 My favorite beer. Deep color and complex mouthfeel, with sugar, apple, and other fruity characteristics. Alcohol is definitely noticeable but surprisingly balanced for such a strong brew. I’ve heard it’s being discontinued, which is a shame. Guess I’ll have to stock up while it’s still in stores NJBeerman013 (763), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Jan 20, 2006 Very fruity, although clean. Those two words usually don’t go together in my book but in this case it fits. A very appley flavor, with the dry hopiness in the background. Frothy head, good lace, deep amber glow. Very good.. I let this rest for about a year. Age was very kind. mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Jan 20, 2006 750ml Bottled 3/29/05. Pours a hazy reddish/orange color. Strong aroma of apple juice and yeast. Somewhat sweet and maybe a little grain. Flavor right up front is of dark fruits and roasted malt. A little chocolate as well. Yeast flavor is only moderate. Alcohol is very well hidden. You can feel the alcohol more than taste it. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Jan 5, 2006 Bottle. Dark copper beer with a big cream colored head. Rich malty/yeasty aroma with some spice and earthiness. Rich malty flavor with some plum and figs. Candy sugar and alcohol warmth. High carbonation. Nice comlexity and depth. Finishes dry and would like the flavors to linger a bit longer. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jan 5, 2006 "Oh my what a head on this one. Filled the glass to the brim with only about a 1/4 of the glass of beer or so. Tasted of candi suger and hops. Had a stong bitter aftertaste. mabye some aging would do this one some good." ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jan 1, 2006 Bottle. Belgian yeast aroma with some wheat and some sweetness in the nose. Yellow, orange, red body. Beautiful. Big, lasting off-white head. Excellent lae. High alcohol profile, but doesn’t taste 12%. Great flavor; Belgian candi sugar. Fairly carbonated, although not overly so. A really great beer with which I rang in the new year (2006). roder60 (1019), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 28, 2005 Pours a hazy golden color with a huge amount of froathy white head. Aroma is orangey, spicey, floral, and a bit yeasty. Flavor is sour and alcohol, fruity, yet sweet finish. Overall, i though this was good, but it lacked something that the grand cru had. Very similar to the grand cru, just not as complete. definitely lose something with the extra abv.
