BeerLimey (1873), California, USA Sep 3, 2005 Rich sweet fruity aroma, orange peel, red apple. Sweet fruity flavor, orange and red apple again, mild spice, noticeable alcohol warmth. A little too sweet and syrupy overall but enjoyable Belgian style ale. SG (456), San Clemente, California, USA Aug 31, 2005 This beer tastes predominantly malty and sweet to me, with a candi sugar flavored finish that must be from the yeast strain if they didn’t add any. Overly carbonated. It’s not bad by any means, but lacks the complexity I expect from the style. Alcohol flavor non-existent in this bottle, but the warming is there. Could use a year in the cellar. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Aug 30, 2005 Pours dark amber—lighter than I expected, almost the color of an Orval—with an unimpressive head. I like the foam on my Belgians big and rocky; this one was small and smooth. Smells almost like very earthy Tripel—some citrus is in there along with the usual Belgian Strong aromas. Alcohol is present, too. Starts off with a very good Belgian Strong flavor, but degenerates into an unbounded orgy of alcohol and phenols. Some of that can be forgiven in a 12% beer, but not all of it. A little disappointing for my favorite style, but still better than most. steview (901), Los Angeles, California, USA Aug 24, 2005 Updated: Aug 25, 2005very lively ale. looks great, and i really like it when the bubbles are tiny and bead together swiftly. the flavor: banana bread, spice, alcohol, plum... are primarily detected; perhaps instead or in addition, there is primarily a pear, or apple sweetness... the spice still lingers. overall, strong, and good when warming--not when cold. not excellent, just good. willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Aug 23, 2005 08.23.05 bottle dated 08.27.04 Strawberry hued honey amber with medium tan head, fading, sticky. Pretty strong aromas of drunken pear and canned peaches, vanilla tinged yeasties, lots of nasally present alcohol, and something custard-like. Flavor is creamy and nutty with heaps of reduced canned fruit salad and more custardy smoothness. I’m tempted to actually try reducing this to top some vanilla ice cream. I get nothing tart or sour or spicy in this stuff, and I think that’s what I’m craving, but add a shard cheese and the stuff is golden. Plenty of effervescence to break up the cheesy fats, too. DaSilky1 (1932), San Diego, California, USA Aug 22, 2005 Nice red-tinted golden color with frothy and lacey head. Aroma was quite creamy with hints of fruit, canoli cheese, and that usual sweet malty barley-wine thang. Prickly carbination. Creamy fruit flavors and kind of sugary though still somewhat dry if that makes sense. Maybe the combo of hops and alchohol. I don’t see the belgian influence here..but then again, maybe it’s just styled wrong on ratebeer. lifeofravis (21), New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Aug 18, 2005 i originally got this beer to go from the victory brewery, because honestly i wanted the 12 % alcohol. I was very pleased when i drank it. Aroma was very good and it tasted good too. I think you are only allowed one of these if you drink it at the brewery (but i could be wrong i havent been there in like 6 months) a couple of these definately did the trick. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 16, 2005 Attractive peach-colored body with abundant carbonation and a thick, frothy cream-colored head. Aroma of toasted sugar cane, moderate spice and clove-like phenols, mild bubble gum, and fresh straw. Flavor brings a blast of sweetness followed by significant bitterness and a warm, toasty, sweet finish. Nice brandy and vanilla notes. Mostly full, sticky body. This is very decadent and a well-crafted American-made Belgian-style strong ale that nicely strattles the line between golden and dark. This was a great birthday present from my sister purchased "to-go" in a Pennsylvania bar. Thanks Lisa!
