COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Pours golden yellow with very light head. Banana and lemon zest notes. Very sweet, almost too sweet. The malts overpower the hops, but the beer’s still tasty (if you’re okay with sweet beers).

Thanks to tastybeer for sharing this beer. It was a decent release from Victory in line with most of their other options from this Pennsylvania brewery. It was not good enough to pick up another one when I saw one on sale in Ohio but if you like sweet Belgians then give it a shot.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated orange body sparkles along with a crisp white head like a sheet of frosting. It almost looks like somebody inverted an orange creamsicle and stuck it in a pint glass. Lemons, citrus, and white reisling give it a fruity feel along with mango and other tropical contributions.

Flavor / Palate - Creamsicle, sugar, and orange melons feel like drinking a warm summer day at an ice cream shop. The creamy mouthfeel is sticky and a little boozy. The vinous finish tastes like drinking white wine in the guise of beer. Overall this is decent, especially the grapefruit and lemons, but it is hard to figure out what feature is meant to stand out the most.

Draft at Blind Tiger with Paul, Andy and Pearl. Pours a pale hazy golden body with no head or lacing. Aroma is dominated by harsh spice, yeast and dry wine. Mouthfeel is okay with notes of spice, yeast, clove, oak and wine.

Bottle:   Dark straw, slight orange hue, thick, moderate frothy white head, nice lacing.   Strong sweet bready nose, yeasty, slightly vinous in a white wine aspect.   Also some melon and mustiness.   Bready start, yeasty, a little musty, with melon and whit wine notes.   A little warming, but not hot.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   A very interesting take on the style.   Not all that floral, but its not too heavy or mealy which is nice.   Soft bready and yeasty finish, moderate vinous aspects, white wine, a little melon.   Very different, and intriguing.

750ml bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a cloudy amber color. The head is a small white shade, not even a finger high. It’s also of a relatively creamy consistency, fading away swiftly. Some vestiges of lacing are left on the glass. S: Some of the phenols and pepper notes I expect from Golden Monkey exists in full force aromatically, with the barrel-aging adding some (pleasant) butterscotch, oak, and vanilla. There are also some distant fruit esters. I get a good oak character, but not much in the way of actual wine: so maybe I should call it a partial success in terms of its barrel aging goals? Anyhoo, this has a much nicer aroma than the base brew. T: At first, the barrel notes have a lesser effect on the flavor profile, only appearing as a tannic dryness on the back end. Give it a few sips, and a hint of vanilla will build up. Before this hits, it’s flavor is similar to the base: faint apple to start, before turning strongly earthy/peppery. White grape notes also help finish this off. Victory got the barrel profile down pat - it’s a subtle addition rather than an overpowering sledgehammer - a shame I’m just not a huge fan of Golden Monkey. Having said that, it’s reasonably complex. M: It has a thin feel, and lacks in creaminess as well. There’s a bit of a sting on my tongue that feels more tannic than anything. Alcohol presence is about what you’d expect for 9.5%, but the dryness on the back end combined with the thin, tannic, well-carbonated nature means this one is fairly easy to drink. O: Golden Monkey is average at best in my mind, and this isn’t too far off from that mark, either. This is probably the one instance where I would have preferred a shameless, unsubtle barrel profile; the base beer has never done anything for me, and probably never will. Golden Monkey fans will eat this one up, though.

Bomber bottle. Aroma is a white wine with some oak and an almost sour smell. Appearance is a gold with a little head, with some chunkage. Taste is belgian with some sour white wine flavor. Palate is slightly sour, and great. Overall, a great beer. Would buy again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a translucent gold with a fluffy white head of foam. The aroma has a good bit of banana esters comingon strong. Taste is fairly sweet and estery. Creamy mouthfeel. Overall, a nice tripel.

25.4 oz. Not the best, but a decent price at least. No head over copper colo, bready apricot smell. The vinous white wine bites through the bready apricot flavor, which to me personally, amounts to an odd overall taste. Not really my style, but I love that Victory is experimenting like this!
