Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Bottle. The look is clear, golden in color, and thin white head. The smell is nice, wine, oak, fruit, yeast, hay, and rustic. The taste is wood, fruit, alcohol, and ok. More delicate and balanced in the aroma.

Bomber into snifter glass. Reddish-tinted golden body with white head. Aroma of booze, grapes, wine, oak, pale malt and a slight floral note. Taste is fruity, yeasty, chardonnay, candy sugar, oak, vanilla and some grassy/earthy hops. Medium body, moderate carbonation, sweet, smooth, full with dry oaky finish. Definitely a wine barrel aged Tripel, a somewhat subdued Tripel pushing more for oak/wine flavors. Very enjoyable take on their Golden Monkey.

Overall this has a sense of a boozy tripel, but isn’t alcohol hot. It’s got wine character galore, and then even has the nice classic playful sweetness. I love wine like tripels, and I am more convinced this is grand more because of the barrel than the recipe. This barrel made this brew truly wonderful, cause I am not a fan of regular Golden Monkey. Real nice, real memorable.

Bottle. Murky gold pour, white head. Good retention/lace. Aroma of white grape, citrus, oak, medicinal notes, booze. Taste is sweet, buttery chardonnay, lightly medicinal, orange sherbet. Palate is soft, slick, sweet finish. Big white wine flavor.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2013 Waited a bit before cracking this bottle. Pours orange with no head and some light coming through. The aroma has a ton of oaky wine barrel, a big tartness from the grapes, most of the monkey is lost. The taste has a lot of oak, some chardonnay notes, some sweetness. More wine than beer but solid.

Bottle. Very pretty gold pour with thick creamy white head. Aroma is quite delicate and enticing, passion fruit, white flour and leather come to mind. Flavor is mild and well accentuated, winey notes, fruity with a dry almost earthy finish. Very well done.

My Bottom Line:
Floral and herbal hops ride this Tripel’s classy, polished profile, as comforting wheat and mild alcohol heat make sure you ponder each sip.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the clear golden.
-The mouthfeel is relatively lean.
-The flavor profile isn’t the most complex, but it is well presented and bright.
-Esters are delicate throughout.

Bière blonde-cuivrée, peu mousseuse. Nez frais, vanillé, un peu sauvage dans les narines. En bouche, c’est boisé / fruité. Intéressant, mais il manque un petit quelque chose pour transporter cette bière à un niveau supérieur.

Look: cloudy shade of gold, 1 finger white head. Smell: Fruity Belgian yeast notes, deep grape musk, honey, some oak is detectable. Taste: Nice blend between oak and fruity yeast. mild floral, vanilla, faint coconut, honey, hint of banana, alcohol is well covered, nice dry bittersweet finish. Feel: Medium-light body, par carbonation. Overall: I’m sorry to see this Monkey leave. The flavor profile is strong but the mouth feel makes it easy to savor. Victory is great at making quality brews, and this one should be added to their portfolio. Recommended.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow gold with no head. The aroma is clove, grape and oak. Medium mouthfeel with grape flavor and oak with boozey finish. Good.
