COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Pour is hazy pale gold with a tight white ring. Nose has a fair bit of oak coming through, Chardonnay is there, light honey, sweet golden raisins and fruit with some estery banana. Taste has strong oak with Chardonnay behind, golden raisins and fruits, nectarine. A touch unintegrated on the wood, rather sweet esters, softer carbonation, creamy full body, velvety on the palate.

Victory White Monkey. Serving: 750 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a hazy deep gold with a lasting white head. The nose is a mix of wood, sweet bread, and spices. A little boozy with fairly heavy oak influence and a little chardonnay note. The underlying base of golden monkey comes through with a little sweetness and spice. Light to medium body with a fairly dry finish. Not too shabby.

Victory never disappoints and this is no exception to that rule. It’s in a bomber. It has a malty smell. It is real crisp and clear. The taste, well you either get it or you don’t. And I get it. It has a barley wine taste, but washes down like a sour. I enjoyed it the more I thought about. I like what they were reaching for. Try it to try it. Definitely not for everyone.

Bottle from the Perfect Pour, Elkridge, MD. Okay, perhaps I was immoderately hopeful for this beer but this was a major letdown. Yes, Golden Monkey has fallen off since the mid-aughts. But still, white wine barrels ought to have been just the ticket with this beer, drying it out, accentuating crispness and hoppy spice. If only any one of those things had actually taken place. Instead, this is a murky orange wreck of a beer. Hot and generally flavorless, it was tough to finish.

Bottle into a Lager glass. Pour is a hazy orange with a fine head. Aroma is a fruitful compound with a nice rounded edge. Taste is over the top, so many notes. Finish is warm. This is truly a great ale.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a medium sized white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of white wine, bright citrus, spice, bready malts, cider apples, a mild candi fruit-like sweetness. The taste is wood, coconut, vanilla, wine, apples, spice, bready caramel malts. Medium bodied. Quite nice.

Bottle: The aroma consists of banana/fruit, oak, vanilla, lemon, and white wine. It pours a golden-orange with a one finger white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with light-moderate banana, citrus, and lightly sweet fruit. The finish has oak, white wine, and a hint of lemon/lemon peel. It’s medium bodied mild carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. Overall, real tasty and pretty damn rephrasing for a 9.5% Tripel.

I find this much different than the original. The aroma is fruity and wine like. The flavor has the wood aging with some oak and vanilla. Finishes surprisingly refreshing despite the ABV. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
