Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

750ml bottle: Pours a clear deep golden bronze with a thin spotty-lacing ring of white head. Has a sweet biscuity malty nose with some peppery clove and slightly vinous oak. First sip is slightly sweet with lots of buttery oak. The buttery character either fades as the beer warms or is overtaken by notes of lavender, honey and white grapes. Finishes drier with some black pepper and light warmth with some lingering oaky complexity. A pretty unique brew that should age well.

Pours clear golden with an orange hue and white head. The aroma brings some sweet Belgian yeast, light oranges, and some of the barrel. The flavor is similar bringing dry and light grapey notes from Chardonnay barrels. The dryness isn’t overbearing, but prevalent for sure. The barrels cover the Tripel flavors of the yeast and malts well at first, but the sweetness of the Tripel comes through on the tongue at the end.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark orange with a fluffy white head. Aroma of oak, booze, chardonay notes, mild sweetness and fruity yeast. Flavor is strong of oak, chardonay, mild barrel funk, some fruit and yeast. Booze is apparent. Some saltiness. The barrel is very upfront in this year, and it compliments the base beer well. Interesting, medium bodied, slick mouthfeel. Finishes boozy.
