COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

UPDATED: APR 12, 2013 3/8/13. 750mL bottle from Grassroots. Mostly clear golden orange pour with a small off-white head that doesn’t last but laces decently. Super sweet aroma with lots of sugar, sweetness, tripel aspects, etc., but with a touch of wine and a good dose of wood... and alcohol. Sweet flavor as well, fruity, sugars, big wood, some wine, more alcohol. Eh.

Westmeister (1534) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAR 8, 2013
Bottle. Pours slightly unclear golden orange with nice foamy head. Smell is white wine, white grapes, vanilla, big oak. Taste is vanilla, oak, white wine, little spice, faint booze. Finish is slighty dry, not overly sweet and creamy. I thought this barrel aging did massive wonders to the original. Very nice.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, side by side with regular Golden Monkey. Clear orange pour, darker than the regular but no opacity differences, nice white head, that lasts fairly well. Aroma brought notes of white fruits, oak, hints of biscuit, bread, touch of sweet peach, grapes. Taste is a mix of sweet white grape, peach, pear, hints of spice, touch of biscuit, bread, nice sweet banana esters, finishing dry, slightly sweet.

750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a hazy gold with a lingering ring of white foam. Aromas of oak, carmel, white wine, white pepper, vanilla and light fruittiness. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of citrus, white wine, oak, vanilla and light spice with a smooth dry lingering oak finish.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2013 Very clear yellow white head visible carbonation. Aroma of candy sugar Belgian yeast pineapple apple and grapes. Taste similar with vanilla wood floral. Boozy but not to bad and fits the style and abv. In a huge fan of triples but I do like this.

Pours a clear golden brown from the bottle with minimal white head and light lacing. Aroma of crisp, sweet grapes, a hint of Belgian yeast and oak. Taste follows, golden monkey with a bit more woody sweetness. Not bad, but not great.

Ernest (6031) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 4, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially small, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark yellow. Aroma is moderately malty (sugar cookie, caramel, husks, popcorn), with notes of butter, rotting apples, and wood. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, unclean. Medium to full body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Wow...so, so bad. Nose is an embarrassing mix of flaws, lots of diacetyl and husky malt and disgusting apple odor. No better in the mouth, either...unbalanced syrupy sweetness with a dirty aftertaste. It boggles the mind how something so consistently good like Helios can come out of the same brewery that produces such egregious fumbles like this. A total drain pour.
