Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Bottle (75 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear deep golden, medium white head. Malty aroma with strong notes of vanilla oak. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Semi dry, low to medium bitterness. A bit cloying.

Bottle via GS. Light orange in color... poured into a snifter, decent head. Nose of sweet malts, apples, light musky grapes and some chardonnay. Taste is not as sweet as the normal monkey, light grape/chardonnay taste. Followed a light malt body and musky grapes and apples/fruit. Not a bad little brewski. Medium body, pretty easy to drink for a 9 percenter. Well done to the brewers.

Looks pretty much like Golden Monkey, light golden color with fluffy white head. Big aromas of white fruits, big chardonnay characteristics in both the aroma and taste. It goes down easy for the ABV. i like me some Golden Monkey, but this is even better.

750ml bottle. Pours golden yellow with a white head. Grapes, oak, Chardonnay, butter. The finish tasted off. I did not like this at all. Drain pour. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle pours a pale orange color without much head. Oaky aroma. Strong almost bourbon oakiness. Overpowering.

Pours clear amber with low white head. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, light honey, wheat. Taste is sweet, butterscotch and burnt butter, sweet finish. Body is medium and creamy with soft carbonation. Boozy and warming.

Barcade, Brooklyn tap: Pours cloudy orange with a white head. Aroma is wood, wine, citrus, and spice. Taste has the barrel-aged flavors kind of overwhelm the the Golden Monkey. The wood tastes are quite strong in this one, as is the taste of grapes. This was interesting.

I actually sampled the test batch of this years ago. I thought it was fantastic, and am horribly ashamed that I can’t recall the specific circumstances or the kind soul who shared some with me. But I remember the beer as clear as a bell, an utterly beguiling mix of tripel with a bright burst of chard grape on a crisp finish. This wan’t quite that. Poured a medium gold, good head. Aroma was cotton candy pale malts, light Belgian yeast spiciness, and a soft fruit presence. Body is full, faint grape enters into flavors that matched the aroma, and vanilla is rather strong on the finish? Full bodied on the end, I miss the crispness of my probably foggy memories. But not bad.
