COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

Reddish gold with a bit of white head. Aroma is sweet estery mulled apple spice with a cheesecake note on top, and a slight oaky sharpness. Taste is mostly the same, but the oak is prominent, and carries with it a chord of chardonnay flavors that dry on the palate into the finish. On balance, this isn’t as sweet as the standard Monkey, and it’s a nice tweak with a known good combination. $10/750ml #1600

THOUGHTS: Sort of a big vanilla bomb. Just like with the Red Thunder, I think the barrel aging sort of muted the beer flavors instead of blending with them and improving them. Maybe it’s just me. TECHNICAL: Drank 3/20/2013. Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, golden yellow with a small to average, ever-so-slightly, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma had heavy pale malt; slight hoppiness, light spicy yeast; white wine; a little wood; light-colored fruit; pear, peach apricot; but MOSTLY vanilla. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was lightly acidic and moderately sweet and bitter with a fairly long duration. There was vanilla, pale malt, light-colored fruit, light grassy and herbal hops, white wine, and some wood. The nearly medium body was fairly dry with a slightly soft but fizzy carbonation and a dry, lightly astringent and ever-so-slightly metallic finish.

750 cork and caged bottle. Some honey. Grapes and white wine balance out the sweetness of the triple. Interesting and pretty tasty.

Draft at Milk Boy. Slightly hazy orange pour with a fluffy white head. Lace. Billed as a Trippel but feels more like an orange marshmallow barleywine. Honey tangerines. Passionfruit. Marmalade on buttered buns. Some citrus zest and spice. Not overly complex. Nice oaky dryness. Bit gummy, like a fizzy orange sweet. Quite unusual.

Light pale golden body with thin but fluffy white head. Nose reminds of a white wine with lemons and some pepper. Very interesting blend of dry white in the mouth with a buttery flavor. Both come across in mouthfeel too. Some hints of various spices from the back of the spice rack. Not one I’d go to everyday, but what a treat.

Bottle shared by Pure Evil, thanks! Golden yellow with a small white head. White vine, fresh, tart aroma with some dill. Taste is fresh, tart and dry, light malty with some white wine, some alcohol shines through. Medium body, soft carbonation, dry mouth feel. Herbal bitter after taste.

You never forget your first love. This beer has just aboit everything going for it. Aroma of white wine, coriander, grape, oak and just a bit of bread. Taste is smooth and incredibly buttery from the barrels, oak shines from start to finish. Best american triple I’ve had since 1990 always.

Shared with Claudia on our first night in RVA. Clear golden pour with quick fading white head. Typical triple sweetness and character with vanilla and oak. The vinous white grapey character is quite enjoyable. Pretty good treatment of an already good beer.
