The tenacious grip of big, juicy hop aroma and character slides smoothly into rich, dark malts. This heavyweight battle between fresh, Yakima Valley hops and dark, roasted malts is resolved harmoniously as the flavors merge to deliver complex satisfaction with a warming edge. Enjoy the ‘twilight’ for the bright and brassy hops!

On draft, Dark copper to light brown with a tan head and some decent lacing. Floral notes on nose with an interesting malt to caramel touch. Mouthfeel is medium bodied while starting on the hoppy side and finishing on the sweater side with front tongue feel.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Rich copper pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is piney and very hoppy with a strong amount of citrus. Flavor is a lot hoppier than I thought it would be, but quite well balanced with some smooth caramel malts. Didn’t realize it was that high in alcohol either.

On tap at the Great Lakes Brewfest 2009. Fire Red with a medium tan head. Aroma of sticky resinous hops, pine, citrus and toasted malt. Taste of piney resinous hops with citrus, caramel and roasted bready malt. Pretty solid libation with a nice bitter finish that lurks on a bit.

On tap @ Mad Mex Cranberry. Pours a clear dark amber with an off white head that laces the glass nicely. Hops are totally overwhelming on the nose, very sharp floral notes. As expected, hops shine in the body; not a bright citrus hop character, more sappy and thick. Malts try to hold up, but are just dominated by conical goodness. Not well rounded, but who cares?

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2010 Had this at Mad Mex. truly double IPA, darker copper, no head, and earthy, not quite so floral but plenty of hops. Big beer for hop heads. I didn’t get much malt but it was buried in there somewhere Also a case of bottles and great aromatic hops 2010 Not sure why it was renamed. It does seem a bit darker, but the hops are still huge

On tap at Victory. Poured a dark ruby brown, off white head. Decent foam head with some good layered lacing. Mild hops and citrus on the nose. Hops in the front with a nice malt smooth texture, citrus notes and slight pepper flavor. Only thing bad about this one was availability, growler fills denied due to low quantities. Good stuff and a wonderful strong ale.

Tap at Browerij. Poured a rich copper color with a small light tan head. Full nose of floral hops, big malts. The nose says drink me. This beer is full bodied and full flavored. It tastes as you would expect a dark Ipa to taste, with nice floral hop, but a richer and fuller malt backbone. Neither is overpowering leaving this really drinkable and really good.

Sampled at ABR ’09. Stinky cheese aroma, but it seems to improve as I drink this. Caramel malts with dry hops. Kind of a hybrid between strong IPA and porter/stout. Decent.

Growler shared at SL by bruce (crazy canuck) Black in color, decent head. Good aroma of roasted malts and hops. Taste is a nice balance between the two. More on the hoppier side, light roasted malts... Medium texture. Overall I not really fan of these black IPA but this one was pretty good. Thanks bruce for sharing

Enjoyed on tap in a tulip glass. The beer pours an opaque black color with a slight off-white head. The nose does not give quite the hop complexity I’d expected (the beer was listed as a black IPA), and instead shows about a 50/50 combination of citrusy (Cascade) hops and roasted malts. The palate is decidedly roasted, giving hints of malt sweetness, but some obvious flavors of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and espresso. It isn’t quite a stout or a baltic porter, but its not quite an IPA, either. Overall, not great, but an interesting, if muddled, hybrid.
