3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught. At Cole’s Rare Beer Fest, January 2009. Clear deep amber pour, with an average off-white head. Dry, medium-roast somewhat grainy malt, and plenty of resin/herbal bitterness. The taste delivered plenty of up-front resiny bitterness, with an overlay of generic light fruit and almost candyish sweetness. Average body, strong carbonation, with a long, bitter, sticky finish - solid, a terrific change of pace amid all the stouts - didn’t knock my socks off though.

2009-01-24. Dark brown body with a modest beige head. (3+) Very green hop aroma, like fresh hop pellets. Lovely. (8+) Flavour has a fresh hop character up front, some dark malt in the middle, moderate bitterness throughout, lingering green hops in the aftertaste. (8+) Smooth average plus palate. Nice! Hit the right buttons at the right time. Tap at Coles Rare Beer Fest, Buffalo

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Coles rare beer fest, a Black IPA. A sub-style I like, exceeding on this day the Phillips I have enjoyed from British Columbia. Its black, a west coast IPA with some shwartzbeer character. Lots of lace. C-hop in aroma not over the top.Above verage mouthfeel.

Draft @ Cole’s. Ruby/brownish body, thin ring of head. Nose is big hop bitterness, some kind of honey malts, a little roast. Flavor is quite hoppy without enough to balance it out. Light roasted malt. Meh.

On tap at Mcmenamin’s. Dark brown slight reddish hue when held to the light. Thin tan head. Fizzy aroma. Some citrus notes. Flavor is very dry - some roasted malt flavors and bitterness. Dry, bitter astringent finish. Not entirely pleasant.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 1, 2013 On tap at Tria. Pours dark brown with a small thick tan head. Aroma of citrusy hops. Flavor of roasted malt with a slight citrusy finish. Astringent and a harsh palate. Just a little too harsh and bitter for me.
Update 2/1/13: On tap. Pours a clear brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of citrusy hops, grassy hops. Flavor is super hoppy, with some dark roasted malts, but plenty of grassy and garlicky hops and a touch of roasted nuts. Great black ipa, very enjoyable the 2nd time around.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at David Copperfields. Creamy brown beer with a thick tan head. Aroma is quite hoppy and herbal. Spicy with a soft cocoa base and a bit of orange peel. Very bright and hop-laden. Spicy and herbal with a lot of pithy resinous bitterness and a kiss of smokiness as well. Warming intensifies the zesty hoppiness and a spiciness. Sticky resinous finish. A hit of cocoa and light caramel gives the malts a bit of intrigue. Pretty interesting.
