I guess this is something of a double IPA only darker in color. Pours a nice coppery brown w/ a big head. I didn’t really find the addition of roasted malts to make a huge impact on the overall character though I suppose it did taste a little brown-ale-like. Certainly, it is not in the range of a porter or anything like that. I am surprised to see that it’s such a high alcohol content. It does not really come across as such a big beer to me. It would have guessed more in the six or seven percent range, just going by flavor. The higher alcohol content does explain why I have a headache this morning though.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with a average size foamy head with good carbonation and light lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with light resin and piney notes is satisfying. Taste is more focused on dry roasted malt then hops though some resin and piney notes still comes trough. Body is light with good carbonation. Not sure if I had an old bottle or what but this is below the standard of the style.

On tap at Petrol Station. Mahogany pour with little head. Hoppy nose with some berry notes as well. Flavor is fruity, with touch of hops and malt finish.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2011 12oz bottle, thanks to 17thfloor. pours dark ruby with creamy off white head. nose has a juicy red fruit character with a band-aid chemical off flavor/infection right behind it. flavors continue with that juicy red fruit hop notes and again that infection is there with a band-aid (or I should say, adhesive strip) even the hops do try their hardest to cover off the off-flavors. 2.8
1/8/11, bottle, pours auburn with off white head. Nose is phenolic, juicy fruit. Flavors are juicy fruit, passion fruit, slight stale coffee roast. Med body. Odd beer and not really a black ipa, thought it was a hoppy red or something before I looked at the style. 3.1

Had a sample in the bar and picked up a 6er for lack of a better choice. Im not a huge fan of this style. Id rather then just make a double ipa and make it well. This imperial red/ipa/american strong ale shit makes me gag. But I’ll probably finish the sixer anyway.

Bottle. Pour is dark amber with this off-white head. Aroma is resin hop, sulphur, and a sturdy caramel malt backbone. The first thing that came to mind after I smelled it was recently discharged fireworks. Not so good. But the flavor was not so much sulphur. It had a firm resinous hop character with a nice malty component. This is like a strong ale mixed with an IPA, not bad but not my favorite.

Consumed 11-27-09...Draft...Bittersweet hopped aroma...mahogany with an off tan head...a sweet sticky malt with a creamy body...hops are mellow and mild with a nice punch toward the end...on a deep sniff...cocoa....its good on flavor...easy drinking with bitter carob powder and sharp hops....in the finish bitter orange and grapefruit...good but nothing too special ...I can dig it
