5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 LaFinca (6) - state college, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 19, 2011What can I say? This is an awesome beer. I won’t go into all the details but if you like a big bold beer, then you need to try this one. I was expecting the worse in the way of sweetness but was really surprised as to how well balanced this beer is. If you like Stone’s Arrogant Bastard, you will love this one even more since the flavor notes are so much more powerful. Warning though, this beer is not for those who love the lighter German beers or the national brands like Coors or Bud. This is what you call a true "Winter Warmer". This is a very potent brew but the abv is very well diguised.

Single from Green’s. Semi sweet chocolate flavor is not always the best on its own. Paired with some light grassy hops though and it starts to cut through some of the powerful cocoa flavors. Bit of a soy sauce aroma. Bordering on a barleywine for me really with a finish that brings you back to some roasty malts. There’s a lot going on here and not all of it comes together in a coherent way.

Bottle. Baking cocoa, caramel, and citrusy pine hops aroma. Deep chestnut with a huge peachy beige head, thick rings of lacing... not black but still a very nice looking beer. Huge resinous piney hops and burnt caramel malt flavor. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Not my favorite black IPA, but solid.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Jur (146) - NETHERLANDS - APR 17, 2013
Bottle @ beerbistro, Toronto.
Not black, but brown! Little nose, some nuts and caramel, no head.
Quite flat taste. Despite the high ABV unremarkable. Caramel, dry, bitter. Ok.

On tap at victory with mike. Huge malt with hops playing second fiddle. Really hearty and clean.

Pours medium translucent brownish amber with thin head. Aroma is caramel and malty with strong hop presence. Taste is opposite for me with an emphasis on hops and a caramel malt background. Excellent balance of hops and malt here. Palate feel is thick and robust making this a fantastic choice for many occasions.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 TomTron (294) - Aiken, South Carolina, USA - APR 3, 2013
Pours a deep red, with a tiny off white that sticks around. Aroma is some earth hops and yeasy, but it smells like a big boy beer. Flavor is big time hop explosion, and alot of bitterness but when I saw this was a black IPA, I thought "No it can’t be". It’s a good beer, but it’s kind of a mess....
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mnmike (609) - Minnesota, USA - APR 3, 2013
Bottle pour - a dark color is what is expected here and it delivers. Metallic on the hop bitters and aroma

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours an almost clear dark - nothing black here though! - amber with a creamy beige head. Greasy thick hop aroma atop some caramel. Rich body, again thick toffeeish caramel - no roast - with a thick hoppiness if somewhat indistinctive. Ends bitter with some alcohol showing. Not bad, bud certainly not a Black IPA - red at the most. 030413
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 alcaponejunior (349) - Texas, USA - APR 1, 2013
Brown and mostly clear, almost an auburn color, very nice lasting head and good lace.
Smell is subdued but consists mostly of citrus and hops, with a touch of dark malts and chocolate.
Flavor is all hops with accents of other stuff, including dark roasted malts, heavier grades of caramel malts (giving it a slight dark fruitiness), and citrus rinds.
Carbonation is fairly low despite the big creamy head. It’s a pretty strong tasting and feeling beer, not something I’d drink quickly, more of a moderate sipper.
Very tasty. A bit unusual for a black ale/black IPA but worth trying for sure.
