Brewed according to the ancient abbey recipes. A beer brewed with love, is drunk in the right mind.

Bottled. Ruby colour, no head. Aroma of canned pineapple and cheap white wine. Sweet and sharp with medium body. Hard and metallic, perhaps some red berries. Flavourwise OK, but I’ve never before encountered a beer with such disastrously sharp mouthfeel.

Bottled (BBE 10/2007)
Dark ruby, good tanned head. Sharp anise/metallic aroma, a bit roast and a bit plums. Carbonated, hard mouthfeel. Quite thin palate, roast, chocolate, evident alcohol, a bit toffee and raisins. Bitterish-sweetish aftertaste, some hops lingering. A bit rough and unbalanced but drinkable.

(Bottle 33 cl) Dark indeed with an almost flat appearance, the CO2 is very low. Lightly sweetish with a lovely almost chocolatey aroma. Soft body with a very discreet hoppiness in the palate. An excellent abbey beer. My version was the original from Vieille Villers in Puurs. Now this is brewed by Huyghe. 080194

Bottled. Dark brown colour with a reddish tinge. Huge, frothy and thick head. Vineous aroma with notes of molasses, blackcurrant and an underlying malty sweetness. Vineous taste. Toasted malt, coffee and hints of dark fruits. Slightly vineous, alcoholic and bitter-chocolatey finish. Bitterness lasts quite a while, and turns a bit into medicine bitterness. Mediumbodied with a somewhat creamy texture. This beer is good in all the subcategories, but unfortunately some of its features don´t work together that well. Still, I found it to be a bit underrated, here. From all the Belgian style beers I´ve had, this one was the one leaning most to porter or stout styles, due to its bitter finish and coffee and chocolate notes.

highlandlad (1464) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - FEB 10, 2005
Sampled this Belgian old brown ale at Australian summer room temperature and found it thin and astringent. Judging by the ratings here, it benefits enormously from being chilled! It poured a teak colour with a small short-lived head. The nose is rich and tarry. Molasses and peppery alcohol. The body is too thin for the style and the alcohol too prominent. Nasty cloying spices and sour vinegary notes in the finish. (Bottle)

Dark murky brown with no head. Aroma has dates, malts and bread. Taste is quite complex; malt is dominant, with spices and alcohol. Medium bodied and drinkable. Very good.
