MilkmanDan (1938), Eagan, Minnesota, USA May 25, 2005 Very nice. Ruby brown with a light tan head. Nice sweet nose, lots of malts, quite buttery. Lovely flavor, really quite sweet but not cloying or overtly sugary. Surprisingly hopped at the end, nice tart citric burst underneath the sweetness. Certainly doesn’t fit my idea of a dunkel, but wonderfully refreshing and enjoyable. A great summer beer. ChrisPants (317), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jan 16, 2005 Pours dark orange-amber with small light head. Lightly fruity, appropriately light hops, smooth palate and perfect amount of carbonation for the weight and flavors.
Overall, an above average ruby. I will try this again. 1FastSTi (2402), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Jun 9, 2005 Poured from a bottle. Pours to a thick off white creamy head atop a copper kettle colored body. The head has excellent lacing. The aroma is malty, buttery, light raspberry, and toffee. I totally agree with MilkmanDan in that this is a really great beer. The flavor is tart, buttery, yeasty and good. Slight caramelly sweetness and some nuttyness. Mmmmm. Wow. I really am enjoying this one. The palate is smooth and creamy and has just the right carbonation. I highly recommend this one. DavidP (1712), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 5, 2007 Clear bright amber body. Sweet grass, and nutty malts in the aroma. Crisp, sweet-grassy and dandelion hops compliment a dry malty base. Lingering walnut shell finish. I’m digging this stuff because of its assertive, crisp and quenching hops. It’s approaching a pale ale but with more interesting malts. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Sep 20, 2003 Color is a dark orangey peach skin color with a thin creamy colored head that subsides some as its consumed. Smell has a good amount of lightly roasted malts, somewhat fruity sweet, with light earthy grass notes. Taste is subdued off-sweet malts, fruitish in a sense, a bit of a roastyness pops in and out with some very light earthyness lingering in the finish. Very smooth and easy medium body, picks up some just past midway and ends with a light airy dryness. Not bad for a marzen but I like the Vienna Woods by a good margin.
