Wow! An Awesome Beer! A Chocolate Stout made with cocoa and a dash of cayenne pepper for warmth.

Had this at the Great Lakes Beer Fest. I was very excited to try this since I’m a big fan of two of Viking’s dark beers. Upon first sip I almost gagged, all I could taste was spiciness and hops. The next beer I drank after that (different beer, different brewery) still had the taste of this lingering. Will not try again!

Dark pour, gushing brown head. Aroma of cocoa powder and chili peppers. Sweet cocoa up front, chili on the finish.

This beer was quite interesting. I thought the spice was at the perfect level. Not terribly spicy, but enough to make a presence with the chocolate in the beer. This does have a lighter body than I’d like it to have.

Scored this as a bonus in a trade. 12oz bottle pours a watery, almost opaque super deep brown with a head that was initially super frothy and then fades to nothing. Toasted bread aroma, light coffee, light malt, some earthiness. Flavor is sweet, chocolate, brown sugar, coffee with cream, toasted bread, malts. Finish is a little watery but with a cayenne pepper kick in the back of the throat. Needed more of a beer base to hang with all the other stuff happening in this.

Bottle. Pour was dark with a very rich, almost milk chocolate aroma. This tasted like a reduced version of the Big Swede Imperial Stout with cocoa added for more chocolate flavor. I thought the initial cayenne flavor was really nice and balanced with the stout character. The body of the beer was a little thin, but overall, the balance was there, and if you got any less cayenne in the flavor, why would anyone even call it a spiced beer? This beer should rate much higher.

Pours dark brown with a thin, light brown head. Smells of pepper, cayenne pepper, cocoa, spicy. Tastes of hot peppers, some chocolate, spice, warming burn from the peppers on the finish. I like this.

pours an opaque chocolate brown with very light tan head that dissipates to close to nothing. Aroma is earthy dark chocolate and almond. Flavor is chocolate with a definite bite in it. There is a spicy note to it, a bit of chipotle. Body is light/creamy with medium carbonation.

Bottle. Pours black with a dark brown head with a gray hue. Aroma has note of chocolate with a slight spicy note. The flavor begins with a sweet chocolate flavor but the spice builds throughout and finishes with a nice kick.

pours black with no head whatsoever. as a matter of fact, there is more head at a church fundraiser than on this beer. another thing... no carbonation at all. nose is iodine and burnt wood. taste is smokey with a little chocolate undertones. a great concept for a beer, but somewhat lacking. first viking offering, but not my last.

Pours a dark brown, that looks black, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly to nothing. Aroma is cocoa powder, and sweetness. Taste is really the same and rather smooth. Finish hits you with the cayenne pepper and it is too strong in my opinion. Not really feeling this one.

Not your normal hot chocolate here. Or a cold one either. Pours a murky brown colour with a fairly large tan head. Aroma has the initial chocolate, roasted smoked malt thing going on. But taste is where it drops. Very rich on the choco part, and a little too much cayenne mid palate. I get it, but not a big fan.
