Víking Golden lager is an internationally recognized quality beer that has received Monde Selection gold medals in 1992, 2002 and 2003. It has an alcohol content of 5,6% by volume and is brewed using a large quantity of hops to give it its much coveted bitterness.

Enjoyed a six-pack of this beer while living in Reykjavik. Poured from the can into a pint glass to rate. The beer is a clear light-average gold color with a smaller white head that had modest cling and retention. It had a primarily grainy and grassy hops aroma with a bit of malt and yeast. The beer was pretty bitter and grainy in taste, with a touch of sour taste too. It had a lively, carbonated mouthfeel, but was also somewhat thin and dry with a light presence of alcohol.

Bottle: Aroma is grainy and grassy. Pale golden, low foamy head. Grainy. light malty aroma. Light sweetness, notes of corn and a slightly fruitiness. Grassy hops in the end. Not bad but quite common.

Half-liter can brought by kuphish after a special occasion. Pours very light pale golden with a lacing sudsy white head. Sweet grainy pale malt nose. Taste is very light and airy, very grainy and lightly drier than expected from the nose. A bit of a wave of alcohol at the back end. Serviceable but the aftertaste is too stale, feral, and grainy for me. Also have to wonder how much better this would be without all the added corn sugar.

Golden as it pours. Not much of a taste. One of the most common beer on tab in Iceland, can sometimes be quite skunky from tab, especially in small places.

Pours and looks like a standard-looking lager beer. Smell is canned veggies with hints of dusty cardboard; this is not looking (smelling) good. Taste is more of the same, gradually transforming from a normal, crappy lager to a horrid, booze-infested bitter nightmare. The relatively low ABV is poured into an ocean of hops and water, leaving me with a parching, acrid bitterness in the worst sense of the word. Bad, bad beer. Hopefully I’ll finish my sixpack of commercial lagers soon, get the rating done and go look for some NICE Icelandic beers...

App: generic Euro lager: bright white gold, bubbly. Managed to get a thick head and some lacing on the glass

Smell: smells like rubber gloves or balloons combined with a Heineken funk (and this is from a can, not a green bottle)

Taste: beginning and middle are bland and neutral. Generic "beer" flavor with some toasted corn. Finish is bad, though. It’s a tang that hits you all at once of rubber, metal and grain. Without this finish it’d be much more drinkable. This is rather foul.

Mouthfeel: thin, wet, tepid. Not bad.

Drinkability: sluggable, but the finish and aftertaste are off-putting.

Overall: It this were only average it’d be much better. That rubber smell and taste are tough to handle. I remember drinking this on tap in Iceland and it was decent (of course, that was 4 years ago). Thanks to my friend who sent me to me all the way from The Faroe Islands, it’s just too bad it sucks.

Not too bad. Slightly sweet aroma. It has a pretty clean taste with a slight hoppy bitterness. Pale yellow with light carbonation.

Nice malty body in this canned beer. Could have done with some more bitterness, but compared to the rest of their range, this is quite ok.
