3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sample at the brewpub. Reddish-amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to a wispy film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit and yeast. Full-bodied and slightly syrupy with flavors of earthy yeast, caramel malt and plums. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Above average overall.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Vintage. Poured medium amber with a dense cap of whitish head. The aroma was spicy with white pepper and darker fruits over warm bread and caramel sugars.. warm undertones, but the alcohol was very well held in check. The flavor found raisins, banana, and darker fruit at the core.. peppery alcohol, more fruit, and dry earthy notes around.. sugary hotness on the finish. A tad heavy-handed on the palate with lots of sugars and alcohol that warmed to the bones.. desserty and tasty.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours hazy yellow with white head. Aroma is belgian yeast to the maximum, banana, clove, some sweet bubble gum. Taste up front is sweet bubblegum, banana, other touch of fruit and biscuit leading into spicy clove, and finishing sweet. No alcohol while drinking, but hits you later, well hidden! Nice belgian brew.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Rich caramel aroma with a very sweet caramel taste. Surprisingly light - lighter than I was expecting... not bad.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On draught at the Vintage brewpub in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-hazy orange amber colored brew with a thick and creamy beige head that leaves behind some excellent lacing and film top. Aroma of banana esters, Belgian spice, cotton candy, and a touch of vanilla. Taste is full bodied, fruity flavors of banana esters, pears, vanilla and some multi-golden malts. Finish is sweet with some lingering yeast aftertaste. The alcohol is well hidden until you stand up. My favorite of the sample tray.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Vintage. Chunky blood-red-brown, unfiltered. Thin, oily head. Sweet, semi-subdued amber malty aroma. Very fruity, quite amber malt forward...one dimensionally so. Some nice vanilla tinged yeast nuances. Boozy, but thick and yeasty enough to mellow it out. Fruity, a step above par for a US Barleywine. Soft and creamy on the palate, really mellows as it sits. Spicy and bold nonetheless, an interesting beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a hazy red color with a good head and some good lacing. The aroma is peppery and fruity with some booze and a mild funky earthy thing happening. The flavor is spicy and fruity with some apple and some booze, really straight forward but everything works well together.

On tap at brewpub
And the award for beer of the day goes to this monster of a Belgian strong ale. Bringing to mind any number of heavy beers at the festival yesterday I am glad I tried it apart from those. The balance, sweetness, and intensity of this would have been lost after waves of big bold one-offs. I don’t know how long it will last but those of you in the area should make an effort to get there while it is still on tap.
Aroma / Appearance - Nearly opaque the coppery body is the color of a beach bum which has spent the last month soaking up sunshine. Creamy vanilla icing looks like sunscreen. Cotton candy, bubble gum, yeast, and apples or pears create a fruity strong impression that cuts through the air with a clear message. In fact it smells almost like nectar.
Flavor / Palate - The warmth of the alcohol envelops the palate. During that time a fruity mixture of white pears, amber, and cotton candy gives it a summer time fairground feel. The dry white wine finish caps it all off. Dessert like due to the ABV it has a filling consistency. Avoiding that cloying nature which would be far too easy an outcome this is a well balanced Belgian in the vein of previous big beers that I tried last time I was here.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at the brewpub - Pours reddish-amber with very little head. Not much on the nose at all--some warming alcohol, apricots, melon, and a syrupy sweetness. Taste is light heat with some tropical fruit, a big sweet malt backbone, and the same syrupy, sugary sweetness. The alcohol was just how I like it, but the stickiness and sweetness was too much for me--and that’s coming from someone that like sweet beers.
