COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
How do you fit a square peg into a round hole? Our hop-heavy golden rye ale thumbs its piggy nose at the style guidelines. It boasts a lavish Pacific Northwest hop bouquet of nectarine, grapefruit and wood, and a lopsided bitterness accented by spicy rustic rye malts. Dry, crisp and unabashededly hoppy, who wouldn’t love a Square Pig?

Boom. Right in your face square pig appears. Come prepared! Or just read the description before you drink it. Its hoppy. Its light. It looks like what beer should look like. It smells like hop sex. Yes thats right the smell of two hop varieties getting it on up in that mash. Its a good thing. The aftertaste is bitter-hop-sweet, with a perfect balance of "Mmmmm that shits good!" Overall vintage did a good job of making me want more. Next step: taking the bus here, so I can enjoy more than two.

Draft at source. Golden with slight haze. Nose of deep lemon and rustic pine with mild, crisp golden malt and faint rye spice. Flavor is lemon citrus and pine bitterness with a light rye malt backing. Much lighter in body than anticipated. Could have benefited from beefing up the malt bill a bit. Overall, a good brew.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a hazy bronze color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and biscuit malt. Light to medium body with flavors of spiced hops, citrus and grainy malt. The finish is mildly spicy rye and citrusy hops. Decent overall.

3oz on tap at the brewpub. Listed on the menu as a "hop-heavy golden rye ale", listed as 5.2$ ABV, 52 IBU. Mostly hazy golden orange color. Thin off-white head Leaves good thicker splotches of lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly soft. Light slick texture, light dry finish. Bready malt aroma, good light spicy tingly rye aroma, and some grapefruit fruitiness. Moderate sweet taste, moderate bitter. Light dry finish. Solid golden rye ale. Pretty solid stuff. I dig it.

On draft at vintage. Aroma of citra hops and rye. Front end you get a slight hop flavor with done carbonation. Back end has a dry bitterness that is tart without being sour. OK brew but not something I would try again.

Tap at Vintage. Golden hop-heavy rye ale. Unfiltered, hazy golden tan. Steady creamy white head. Astringent citrus rind dryness coupled with sweet Rye tones. Fresh and quite enjoyable. Well balanced, comes together well. Coop and crisp, mild tropical tones. A bit sugary at times with the rye, I’d love to taste this beer without the rye addition. The hops carry this one.

On tap at Vintage Brewpub. Golden yellow with at thin white head. Aroma is dank with pine, rye, noble hops and a touch of bready malt. Taste of rye, noble hops, mild woodsy notes, faint citrus and finishes with moderate bitterness.

Pour at the brew pub. You know a Rye IPA always gets my attention. Pours a nice golden color with an offwhite head. Aroma of nice, citrus hops, with touches of spicy rye. Lots of grapefruit and peach, slight woody and bready notes. Flavor is spicy, bitter, with lots of hop bitterness and nice meaty umami notes. Somewhat salty, medium bodied. Finishes bitter. This is a nice Rye IPA.

This is an excellent mid-level IPA that brings a Wisconsin touch to the West Coast IPA approach. Drinkable with a nice finish that does not crush the palate it is one example of why I keep coming back to this place every year.

Aroma / Appearance - A cloudy golden base is hazy with a light film of white powder for decoration. Hints of carbonation are present. Mango, rye, and fresh citrus create this bright aroma that sticks in the air without being unbalanced or over the top.

Flavor / Palate - The bitterness is immediate from the second the first drop hits the tongue. Oak, citrus, and grapefruit appear soon after. The transitional rye flavor sweeps the excellent balance into the robust finish. With everything that is going on it is hard to pin this down exactly but whatever you call it the outcome is great.

Draft at the brewpub. Bright yellow, fizzy and hazy. This drinks with a sharp and citric character with a bit of a gristy feel, the rye definitely take a front seat. (#5127, 7/3/2013)
