3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft on tap the brewpub (Madison, WI). Pours a well hazed golden dulled hue, touches of straw, orange in there with a frothy offwhite head atop, dies to a decent ring, small lacing. Aromas are some bananas and apples, bread dough, touches of honey, flaked wheat, a telltale sweetness. Faint lemon. Initial is light bodied, a bit watery offering some banana, bread dough, estery fruits, growing flavors into the backend with more banana, touches of lemon, bread dough, a light spice and subtle vanilla, honey. The flavors are leagues ahead of the aroma, offering some spice, vibrant estery banana, bread dough, flaked wheat, touches of vanilla, touch of lemon. Finish is crisp and lingering sweetness with that lemon rind growing just a touch stronger. Pretty solid Weiss overall. Lost points on appearance and aroma (which was fairly weak).

Draft at Vintage. Thick, unfiltered orange-tan. Minimal, patchy, soapy head. Malty, banana laced aroma. A pretty solid wheat, classic yeast tones. A touch maltier and thicker than a classic German example. Pleasant lemon dryness balances the sweet banana tones. Well done.

"What will more then likely end up being their flagship beer. People really seem to enjoy this one quite a bit. It’s pretty tastey, ill admit. Fruit, sweet but balanced. Cloudy golden, big frothy white head. Banananna and clove, plenty of wheat with just a touch of hops near the finish. Slightly yeasty with some bubblegum. Nice and citrusy."

On tap. Straw gold with haze. Aroma is great for a weiss - full of citrus, clove, spice, and yeasty goodness. Flavor thins out a little quick fading to mild pale malts/wheat and a little lemon. Overall ok.

On tap at the brewpub. Looks and smells like your standard hefe. Not bad, but nothing really stands out as anything special. I have not been feeling wheat beers as of late and this one is not changing my mind.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Vintage. Poured hazy medium golden with a short cap of white head. The aroma picked up sweet, lightly-toasted bananas and bubblegum accented by cloves and white pepper.. well done. The flavor found sweet bananas at the core with tangy cloves and wheat around.. sharper on the finish, picking up a hit of floral bitterness. Light-medium bodied and very dry on the palate.. tanginess from the wheat worked well.. solid brew.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at brewpub
I really was not sure what to expect when I saw the tap list here. JT Whitney’s was known for mailing it in at times. Obviously this place has learned. None of the four beers I tried were half hearted attempts. With ten beers ranging across all styles I could have spent another two hours here if not for other obligations. It certainly means a return visit is in order.
Aroma / Appearance - Cloudy and hazy this orange body looked appealingly like a hefeweizen. The clear white layer of head graced the liquid like a crown. Cinnamon, cloves, bananas, and a strong spiciness gave this a zesty kick. Orange peels added more depth. Leaning towards the yeasty end of the spectrum rather than the fruity did not appeal so much to my personal tastes but it was still well crafted.
Flavor / Palate - The chewy mouthfeel combined cloves, cinnamon, and orange rinds seamlessly. The dry rye finish introduced hints of ripe banana. Easy to drink at under 5% this would make for a nice go to session beer on days when you do not want something heavy. I wish beers like this had been available when I lived around the corner.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On draft at the brewpub, which I know as the old JT Whitney’s. Sigh. Pours a hazy amber with a small white head--looks real appetizing. Smells lightly spicy and fruity, just like I’d expect. The taste is a little syrupy though, with a bit more sweetness than I prefer. There’s light spice up front, with a slightly dry finish and a bit of banana. In a town that’s used to New Glarus’ wheat beers, it’s going to be hard to impress with a hefe.

As close to a perfect weissbier as one can find. Spot on color and head, spot on aroma and flavor.
