Virtue Cider is doing cool things in the world of cider. For their latest, they “borrowed” an idea from Beaujolais producers – Beaujolais Nouveaeu, specifically. They picked the freshest fruit to make the freshest, youngest cider possible.

Our first release of the 2013 harvest. French, dry, sparkling, and a perfect new tradition at your Thanksgiving table. To be released each year on the second Thursday of November.

This bottled Cider from a beer festival poured a medium sized head of frothy fine to large sized white colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a very softly carbonated transparent yellow white colored body and a poor lacing. . The mild citrus sour dry mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish with a lingering dry aftertaste. The ok flavor contained notes of golden apple dry and fruity. An OK brew just nothing special.

The aroma is like cheese and feet and very dry. The appearance is pale golden with a tiny head. The taste is like the aroma just less funky. The palate is typical. Overall a drain pour.

Nice sweet and tart aroma of apples with some musty barn notes. Very pale yellow color. Dry tart apple up front. Complex tartness, with a musty bitterness and finish. Nice dry finish.

tap - This cider smells of tart apples. It tastes sweet up front with a dry, tart finish. It’s very bubbly and overall a fairly good, interesting cider.

750ml bottle. 2013 vintage. Interesting having what is supposed to be a "fresh young cider" a year old almost exactly, and I hope to try it fresh as well but this isquite mellow, not sweet at all, all dryb ut not tart, just a pleasant drink.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy light yellow with a bubbly white head that dissipates immediately and completely. Aroma has a good amount of funk with some earthy apples and a hint of tartness. Flavor is similar but starts a bit thin and grows to have dry apple, a good amount of must and a touch of funkiness.

(bottle - corked & caged 750 ml) Orange pour with a light head. Grossly sour aroma with an equally gross and dry flavor. No thanks.

tap. Pale golden with minimal head. Barnyard aroma. Funky and tart cider. Very dry and acidic, not enough apple for my taste.

750ml bottle from Binnys Naperville (Naperville, IL). Finally got around to grabbing this one to keep the series going. Opened with Mrs. Alum. Pours a well hazed almost murky yellow champagne hue. Lively bubbles, quickly dissipating brighter white head dies to nothing. Bubbles stay through the body, dulled translucent body shows that champagne slant. Aromas are a bit yeasty and dry, gentle spiciness meets apple juice and skin, a gentle kiss of white grape, champagne like with some yeasty funk, faint vanilla. A bit of sulfur and stink at times. Initial is lighter bodied, dry and a bit yeasty, with gentle red apple, touches of yeast, dryness and gentle mellow spice. A bit bland and mellow semi-sweet qualities, the residual sugars are well fermented out, touches of vanilla, gentle clove and spiciness. Mellow sweet and tart apple qualities mix in and out, subtle, lighter body. It’s pretty approachable, perhaps a bit bland as a focus or strength doesn’t develop for me. The apple sugaars are fermented out, but the yeast also doesn’t assert and dry it out as much as you’d expect. Subtle vanilla, clove, and spice give it a touch of complexity, with gentle tartness, apple skin and mellow white grape. Solid stuff. Not my favorite cider from Virtue thus far but it certainly is pretty solid. Quite approachable. Kinda would like a bit more yeast/dryness to come in on that backend but it’s certainly enjoyable and grows on me as the dryness and yeast creeps in a bit more further in.
