Pours almost entirely black with minimal ruby hues. Large creamy tan head. Nose of lightly smoked chocolate, espresso, pumpernickel and alcohol. Strong whiff of smoke on the first sip. This is about as balanced a smoked beer as I’ve ever tried. Totally not in your face. It’s a bonus. Very peppery carbonation. Again... lots of chocolate and coffee, crusty bread malts, mild alcohol heat, but doesn’t really amp anything up, which is nice. Body overall seems a tad light, but this is a livelier example. Notes of roasted beef broth, charcoal, briny, roasted mushrooms/earthy vegetables. Very clean finish. Very interesting stuff.

VIVEN Porter : en fait j’adore les porter, vu très noire, gros goût de café, pas trop forte. très bon souvenir de cette bière

bought@Bierhandlung Freiburg; the most outstanding feature of this beer is that ordinary hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts taste like super fresh ones, when paired with it. Wow. Nose: a lot of roast, dark caramels and cruder herbs like sage. Coffee as well. This porter is quite bubbly, but in a well-done way where the bubbles create a creamy mouthfeel, also as a good counterpart to the near-harsh soy and sage edged roast dominating the taste. Slight alcohol whiffs. Nice long bitter finish.

Rokerig gecarboneerd aroma. Smaakt naar chocolade, donker fruit en koffie, beetje metallisch, caramel in de afdronk die verandert in een licht bittere lange afdronk, lekker!

33cl bottle at Cambrinus, Bruges. Pours black with two fingers of light beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, some smoked meat, light hops, some bitter coffee. Similar taste, smoked flavors not too strong, some coffee again, quite dry finish. Full body, light carbonation. Very good.

330 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a very dark brown with good-sized mocha-coloured head. Aroma has some smokiness, coffee, a little chocolatey sweetness and leather. Flavour is roasty with a bit of smokiness that is balanced by a gentle sweetness with notes of cocoa, coffee and leather. Slick mouthfeel. Nice.
