Bottle. Pours dark brown , almost black with a small beige head. Aroma of smoked ham, some roasted notes, chocolate, malt and coffee. Flavor is sweet and smoked with some roasted malt, grains, chocolate and nuts. medium body, average carbonation.

Bottle. It pours a dark brown body, unclear, and topped by a creamy, minimal sized light beige head. Rather smoked aroma, ham and some old bonfire. Some cocoa and forest. Creamy, soft mouthfeel and semi-dry. Some alcohol warmth too. Ham, bonfire hints and cocoa in the flavor, nice bitterness too. Lasting roasted and bitter finish. Some yeasty hints. Certainly not a beer I’d expect from Belgium, but it’s pleasant indeed. 130516

Pours black with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of roasted matl, chocolate, coffee, smoke and floral. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Viven van Viven. Vive Viven van Viven. Que vive Viven van Viven. Cette porter va créer un raz-de-marée sur l’Angleterre, parce que c’est une chasse gardé nationale, et ma fois, si je comprends bien le genre, on a affaire ici à un maestro... Donc raz-de-maestro sur le porter au pays des anglais … Qu’on se le dise !! Le porter n’est plus anglais mais belge (en l’occurrence), et nous avons déjà connu quelques noms mémorables dans le genre !!! (cfr la Noir de Dottignies par de Ranke ou la Kabert des Struise … , et aussi bien sûr, déjà par la Proefbrouwerij, la Troubadour Obscura) Donc, ne devrait en souffrir la modestie des anglais, les stout et porter sont aussi belges. Qu’on se le dise !! Etiquette très sympa sur le modèle des « Wanted » des Western aux States. Couleur de la bière noir charbon, absolument opaque. Même une autruche (struise) n’y retrouverait pas ses petits … Même en transparence, rien n’y fait. Charbon is charbon, isn’t it ? Mousse café moka qui nappe à 3 mm. Arômes de moka, cerises noires, pointe de péket, de cassis, mûres, pain noir et bien sûr bois en train de fumer. Volume très structuré de la 1ère bouche, qui nous offre un super concentré café/fumée. D’ailleurs la bière s’appelle aux States « smoked porter ». Arrière-bouche plus complète avec du malt. 2ème bouche dense avec une belle profondeur, et une toute légère nuance de kirsch et de cassis. 3ème bouche où les nuances s’affinent, tout en restant dans le domaine du vigoureux. On trouve aussi un fond de single malt tourbé assez original. La longueur montre un grand fondu concentré. Du vrai café, comme celui pour lequel on achète une vraie cafetière italienne pour le faire. La levure est du caillou, structurée, forte. L’alcool est très bien pour le sujet (on dirait un wanted 7 abv … cherchez pas, c’est codé). Finale où on reste sur la lancée, avec du chocolat noir à 90 % de cacao. Bref, on a trouvé le coupable sur l’affiche, et la récompense va se dévoiler en chiffres : 5 dollars (pardon, j’oubliais les 0, donc 5000 dollars), mais 5 étoiles, oui.

330 ml bottle. Pours deep black with a small lingering head. Aroma is full of nice coffee and mocca notes, roasted malt, cigars, leather. Very nice. Body is watery though, with a tad lack of sweetness imo, flavour is again leather and earth.

mocha coffee coloured head that disappears quite fast with lacing. coffee coloured beer. coffee, chocolate, earthy, smoke and something "nutty" in the aroma and taste. kind of coffe, earthy, salty, smokey medium lasting aftertaste. slick medium but somewhat thin mouthfeel and quite soft carbonation.bottle 33cl

Bottle 33 cl @ HBF 2013. Pours black with brown white bubbly head and a coffee scent. Taste is pretty much like smoked ham also notes of roasted malts, coffee. Slight disappointing.

Bottle 33 cl, BBE 07/01/2015. Pours dark brown in color with a foamy beige head. Roasted malty notes, some nuttyness and coffee notes in aroma. Smoky taste, some roasted and raw coffee beans. Similar to Nils Oscar coffee beer. Yet this feels quite smooth. Roasted coffee notes in aftertaste. This doesn’t reach the same good level as other brews of Viven I’ve tasted. Some bitter chocolate in aftertaste.

My nose mostly picks up smoke, black beer brown head. Taste is smoke with other light porterish notes. Body is light, a bit too light for a porter, short aftertaste. Gets better as it warms.
