Viven Porter, a SMOKED Porter at 7.0 vol%. This is the first commercially available smoked porter made inside Belgium! A revelation! Notice the care that’s been taken for the image. Black lettered labels and capped with a black crown cork. This beer pours completely black ! The foam is creamy and brown colored. Folks, that’s already a sign of quality ! Now, this is stunning folks ! I already had this beer at the Bruges Beer Fest, and was already surprised by it. This time, some bottle conditioning has even done some more complexity. Nosing immediatly gives roasty and smokey accents, and this in perfect harmony with - again - fruity yeasty flavours. Tasting gives a very thick beer. Wow, what a dense liquid. I taste sweetness, smokey malt flavours, tobacco, fruits (plums-raisins-dried fruit), roasty malts, coffee. Again, an amazing brew this is from Dirk Naudts.

Robust porter and, like their Imperial IPA, launched in 2009; Viven had consisted of rather unobtrusive, cliché beers up till then, but with these two, they suddenly drew a lot of - deserved - attention. Yellowish, thin, moussy head, very dark wine-red colour, almost black, clear. Aroma of smoked bacon, dates, olives, balsamic vinegar, coffee grounds, Worcestershire sauce, stewed beef, charcoal, candied plums. Rich malty taste, caramel, nutty, smoked and roasted bitterness, dry, long and complex, bitter ending further supported by a citrussy, American hoppiness. Wonderful, I wish there were more beers like this available from Belgian brewers.

Bottle: Deep brown with a small fading head and not much lace. Now this is smoke! Lovely smoked nutty and dried dark fruit characteristics. Earthy and woody. Nice and surprisingly smooth drinker. Just spot on classic smoked beer... Why isn’t this listed as a smoked beer?

Riktigt god.

In aroma it has dark, tanned, sweet malts. It’s totally black, non-transparent, nice beige head and lacing. In taste it’s very tanned and has a notes of dark chocolate. It has rather small body and it’s a bit to much carbonated, what I don’t like so much in porters. But in the end it has this super cool aftertaste of this dark chocolate.
