bouteille 33cl, fort gushing. Couleur jaune trouble, bonne mousse blanche.

I suspect the participation of Struise Brouwers in the old Deca brewery has something to do with the barrel aged beers they are coming up with recently, and so far this has yielded some interesting results. Light gusher but manageable. Egg-white, moussy, thin head but retaining quite well seen the ABV; colour is a warm orangey peach blonde, misty with lively fizz disturbing the haze of minute yeast bits distributed throughout the liquid. Very Belgian tripel aroma of peach, orange peel, lots of dried banana but no bubblegum, biscuit, very strong bourbon indeed, apple-like calvados effect, caramel, wet wood but subtly so, dried bitter herbs, strong dried hay and earth. Sweet onset, some white candi sugar even to the point of nearly becoming cloying, red apple, banana, overripe pineapple and peach ’esteriness’ with an orange flesh accent bringing some refreshment, finely but initially quite sharply tingling carbonation decreasing after a while, smooth and supple body consisting of sweetish caramelly and honeyish malts, bourbon-like alcohol also feeling a bit calvados-like in combination with the apple ester and palpable at an early stage, even burning a bit on the tongue, providing a wave of warmth in the end with a somewhat wry edge, becoming a bit tiresome in the end; earthy and herbal hop bitterness balances the sweetness a bit, but still the honeyish malt sweetness stretches the longest; some spicy phenols retronasally as well as a hint of wood, but in this case clearly the bourbon is much more clear in both nose and mouth than the wood as such. A tripel elevated to barley wine style, like some other very strong pale Belgian ales, very suitable as a slow sipper on a cold day. Not the most refined beer in this style by far, very boozy and a bit crude even, but for me this passes, I did enjoy it, though I did find the honeyish sweetness a bit much and the alcohol should be less obvious even in a beer of this strength. Vaguely reminds me of that Trignac thing Van Honsebrouck did, but with some more body and far more reasonably priced...

(bottle) murky golden-amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of almonds, grapes and apricots, with a light touch of pale malts, some vanilla, physalis and bread dough. flavour is mostly caramel, strawberries and more bread dough, rather sweet, with some very faint notes of vegetable stew, walnuts and a semi-dry finish. heavy-bodied with average carbonation.

(bottle, 33cl, gusher) Hazy, golden coloured hue with floaties and a mid-sized and off-white foamy head. Yeasty, fruity malty aroma with notes of overripe fruits, vinous and delicately oaky and mouldy accents. Sweet flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Mildly sugary malty base with juicy notes of fruit punch, shades of caramel and alcohol, accompanied by discreetly oaky notes; sweet malty and slightly sticky finish with lasting fruity, punchy notes and alcohol. Okay. 22.IX.15

Bottle at Kulminator. Golden pour, small white head. Aroma of honey, grain and vanilla. Taste has a lot of grainy honey at first, then the bourbon vanilla kicks in. Good combination of honey and bourbon. It’s uncommon to age blonde beers, but this works quite well.
