hackobock (2101) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - MAY 15, 2015
May 15, 2015. Bottle at home, best before august 2018.
Dark brown with a small, quickly dissipating, off-white head. Aroma is dark sugar, plum, dark berries, alcohol, slight roast and oak notes. Taste is sweet with caramel, plum and raisin, light bitter. Finish is dark berries, alcohol and a dry woody note which takes the edge of the sweetness and make it more drinkable. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Sweet fruity and malty aroma, with tiny sour notes and wooden and vanilla background. It’s dark copper color, almost seal. The beer is almost clear, has one finger bright beige head, strongly carbonated. Has awesome full and rich mouth feel. Alcohol is perfectly covered in the taste, you can feel small pinching in aftertaste and big warming from inside. It gives this beautiful feeling after breathe out. In taste it’s malty and fruity with great barrel notes and sweet finish. It has no bitterness. In overall great, huge beer.

Alengrin (2993) - BELGIUM - MAR 22, 2015
’Massieve ale’ aged on oak barrels, but since it is nowhere specified what these barrels contained before, I assume they are new, or at least not used for wine, liquor, sherry or anything other than beer. Dark but transparent, hazy, reddish burgundy colour (a typical quadrupel colour, let’s say) under a loose, milky, irregular, yellowish light beige head. Strong aroma of port wine, brown sugar, candi syrup, lots of sweet cherry, raisins, banana, milk chocolate, candied dates, toasted bread, some oaky tannins, walnut liqueur, plum wine, orange peel, caramel, cinnamon, marzipan, dried ginger. Full, rounded, soft and rich mouthfeel, candied sweetness in the onset with citrus fraîcheur and a sourish accent for balance; big maltiness ensues, very caramelly and a bit nutty, with spicy yeastiness on top, alcohol already present in the form of a light burning sensation on the lips and the tongue. Still, it remains quite mild and ’gentle’ in the finish: it is clearly there, but with a more delightfully warming than astringent effect. Dry woodiness, herbal hop bitterness and lingering, but not cloying candi sweetness make up the rest of the finish, which develops over a relatively long period of time. Perhaps not the most delicate quadrupel, perhaps a bit too big in alcohol and candi sugar sweetness and in that sense not the most subtle example, the sugar and alcohol fall heavily on the stomach, but if you are into this style, this is certainly recommended. Undoubtedly ages well, too.
