Came highly recommended after winning a blind taste-test with Westvleteren 12, Rochefort 10 and St Bernardus 12. Whilst I'm a touch sceptical on that regard, the barrel-ageing was very appealing. Pours standard - little head and thankfully no gush. Dark, murky brown. The scent is less fruity than its other Abt quad equivalents. A bit thinner, but there's some oaky port coming through. The taste generally follows the nose Sweet flavour with some vanilla and pear from the barrel. A lot of caramel and sweet fruit, but less port-y than a Rochefort. The alcohol is there and it's a bit drier and has a wood taste that unfortunately is more sawdust than port barrel. Typical strong Belgian yeast flavour (curious to know the strain). Mouthfeel is perhaps the letdown. The flavour washes away with a bit of alcohol warmth too give a touch of a soapy taste (Little Creatures Pale anyone?) besides your typical quad flavours. The tastes all come at once, which means it doesn't quite hit the complexities of its compatriots, but the aftertaste is warming and pleasant. Overall, unfortunately I am always going to be highly critical of the style, being such a fan of Abt quads. In its own right, it is a well-accomplished beer, but if you want to truly get the best of the style, you'd have to look to the others mentioned above. The barrel-among is barely noticeable in all fairness. You're better with Pannepot. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

May 15, 2015. Bottle at home, best before august 2018.
Dark brown with a small, quickly dissipating, off-white head. Aroma is dark sugar, plum, dark berries, alcohol, slight roast and oak notes. Taste is sweet with caramel, plum and raisin, light bitter. Finish is dark berries, alcohol and a dry woody note which takes the edge of the sweetness and make it more drinkable. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Sweet fruity and malty aroma, with tiny sour notes and wooden and vanilla background. It’s dark copper color, almost seal. The beer is almost clear, has one finger bright beige head, strongly carbonated. Has awesome full and rich mouth feel. Alcohol is perfectly covered in the taste, you can feel small pinching in aftertaste and big warming from inside. It gives this beautiful feeling after breathe out. In taste it’s malty and fruity with great barrel notes and sweet finish. It has no bitterness. In overall great, huge beer.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2015 ’Massieve ale’ aged on oak barrels, apparently from port wine, though this is nowhere mentioned on the label. Dark but transparent, hazy, reddish burgundy colour (a typical quadrupel colour, let’s say) under a loose, milky, irregular, yellowish light beige head. Strong aroma of indeed a lot of tawny port, brown sugar, candi syrup, lots of sweet cherry, raisins, banana, milk chocolate, candied dates, toasted bread, some oaky tannins, walnut liqueur, plum wine, orange peel, caramel, cinnamon, marzipan, dried ginger. Full, rounded, soft and rich mouthfeel, candied sweetness in the onset with citrus fraîcheur and a sourish accent for balance; big maltiness ensues, very caramelly and a bit nutty, with spicy yeastiness on top, alcohol already present in the form of a light burning sensation on the lips and the tongue. Still, it remains quite mild and ’gentle’ in the finish: it is clearly there, but with a more delightfully warming than astringent effect. Dry woodiness, herbal hop bitterness and lingering, but not cloying candi sweetness make up the rest of the finish, which develops over a relatively long period of time. Perhaps not the most delicate quadrupel, perhaps a bit too big in alcohol and candi sugar sweetness and in that sense not the most subtle example, the sugar and alcohol fall heavily on the stomach, but if you are into this style, this is certainly recommended. Undoubtedly ages well, too.
