Bottle #404 12/14/12 picked up at Voodoo release. Poured black with a rim of tan foam. Pleasant aroma of bourbon choc and vanilla. Taste of strong choc and roastyness, slight boozy bourbon. Good stuff.

Woodshed 3.0! Big thanks to dak for saving this whole series and sharing with us. Awesome!! Bottle pours with a dark brown body that supports a thin tan head. The mild aroma offers up smooth smelling residual sugars, molasses and sweetened dark roasted malts. There isn’t much barrel noticed in the nose. The taste is smooth and rich with a mix of dark roasted malts, a sliver of burnt malts, slippery residual sugars and dark roasted coffee. Behind those notes lurks a smooth mellow soft bourbon booziness. Nice.

Nearly black color with a brown head. Nice rich bourbon, light roast, chocolate, vanilla...tasty!

Bottle shared @ Woodshed 3.0 by way of Dak! Crazy generous dude! Dark mahogany pour with onyx, squid ink, and midnight at its core. Latte head. Surprised this didn’t stand up quite as well as its sister brew. Cocoa, vanilla, coffee, oak, and bourbon. Alcohol fairly well hidden. Clingy but not coating. Really good but not world class.

Pours dark unclear thick blackish with almost no head, a dark beige ring of lace. Aroma is my favorite part bringing big vanilla, brown sugar, and smooth barrel. Flavor is roasted malts covered with barrel vanilla so smooth, but the muting of the chocolate and coffee from the barrel isn’t my preferred manner.

Bottle (#225)... This beer’s balls drag the ground!… Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, khaki head. The bouquet is a swirl of malt whisky, dark mocha and toasted oak barrel. Full-bodied and velvety with modest carbonation. The flavor offers heaps of charcoal and other carbonic notes, bourbon and dark sherry without nearly as much bourbon heat or malty sweetness as I was expecting. Bold, warming, Pappy finish. The Pappy nuance is lovely and unmistakable. Another world class rarity provided by the ever-generous landhoney! All barrel-aged imperial stouts should be aged in PVW barrels in my humble, yet correct, opinion.

Of note: I realize PVW is a Kentucky-brewed and distilled sourmash whiskey; but to me, Pappy has always smelled more like an Irish malt whisky or Macallan brand Scotch whiskey than a Kentucky corn-heavy bourbon.

Sampled at DLD 14 Thanks to the Pennsylvanian who shared this with me and my buddy. Pitch black pour with a creamy brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet bourbon, vanilla, sweet roasted malt, chocolate and loads of ripe fruit. The flavor is very intense. A great mix if sweet bourbon, raisins, chocolate, oak and sweet roasted malt.

Pour is mostly black with brown edges and a thinner dark tan head. Nose is smoother whiskey and wood than the others, still not as bright as the lairds but better integrated. Chocolate and decent malt balance. Taste is richer and seems to have a better malt body. Chocolate and bourbon with notes of wood and slightly roasted malt. Much less sweet than the others, full bodied and doesn’t thin in finish like lairds. Inviting palate and solid flavors. Best of the bunch, not as rich or bright as the black magick pvw.

Bottle # 225. Dark brown pour with a mocha head. Bourbon and chocolate aromas. This treatment is by far the best of the 3. The bitterness and apple notes have subsided. The bourbon and oak notes are coming through and complementing the roasted malt and chocolate characteristics.

On tap at Bainbridge. Dark brown with minimal head. Nose is chocolate, roast, bourbon and plum. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is chocolate, bourbon, wood and dark fruits. A bit too much of the barrel but so smooth and still quite good.

Tap at barrel release 2 pours a nice thick Black and Tan head, aroma is bourbon, taste is a nice not overpowering bourbon with a nice thick mouth, lots of roast and the bourbon blends well with this beer, delicious
