4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Transfer from BA review on 7-23-12
Poured from 2011 vintage bottle into snifter
Appearance – Pours a pitch black color, with a vigorous pour giving almost no head on the beer. When swirled in the glass the beer looks thick; it slowly slides down the side of the glass, returning to it resting home with the rest of the liquid. It looks thick and big!!
Smell – The smell is huge and complex. Strong notes of bourbon and booze dominate the smell, but these are mixed with aromas of chocolate, coffee, black licorice, and some smoke and char. Just like the appearance the aroma is big and you know you are getting into something quite intense.
Taste – The taste starts out of milk chocolate and nice notes of roasted malt and a light caramel. Soon a good deal of smoke and a sweeter vanilla flavor enter the taste and mix with the original flavors. At this point the taste is overall on the sweeter side, with light hints of bitter and booze this all changes very soon however. More toward the end of the taste, a big, bold and boozy bourbon alcohol flavor come to the taste. Roasted malt and some char flavors accompany the boozy flavors, bittering up the brew and creating a less sweet but more roasty flavor. At the end, the taste is big of roast and char and mixed with the good presence of bourbon boozy taste and chocolate to leave a long lasting more bitter boozy cocoa flavor on the tongue that warms you throughout. Wonderful!!
Mouthfeel – Massively thick body on this one!!! It has a thick and smooth body that coats the entire mouth, bathing it in all the complex and roasty/dark flavors. Not surprisingly for the thickness of the brew, the carbonation level is on the lower side really allowing those flavors to sit and linger on the tongue. The heavy presence of alcohol is defiantly not missed with and creates a very warming feel on the tongue as well as the body as a whole.
Overall – The beer is huge and big with tons of roasty and boozy flavors. A brew that took nearly 1.5 hours to drink. A great one to sit back and sip; enjoying all the great flavors and sensations of the beer.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pour is pitch black with no head, thick, viscus. Aroma has notes of rich roasted malts, bourbon, and slight vanilla sweetness. Flavor is very boozy with low carbonation. Too thin and boozy for my liking.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle from beerisheaven, a long time ago. First bottling (unlabeled)
A: Obscenely black. Leaves very little of the mocha head after a decent pour. Sharp legs albeit not very dense.
N: Bourbon, oak, soy sauce, fudge. Lots of vanilla, some caramel, and a heaping spoonful of coconut. Very sweet, and when I draw in the aroma, it warms my nose like bourbon does. There’s a hint of oxidation, cherry syrup, and some brandy.
T: Starts with an aggressive roast and bitterness. Adds a touch of sweetness through the middle and finishes up with oak and charcoal. Hint of salt and iron.
M: Potent stuff. Really strong - to the point where it opens my eyes a little wider. Quite thick, but it’s rather drying. Alcohol seems to have eased off the throttle.
O: A solid beer with a lot to offer if you like ash and cigars, but it might do with a touch more sweetness. Holding up pretty well, though.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle pours a dark black/brown with slight tan lacing for a head. Aroma of chocolate, Bourbon, oak. molasses. Taste is a heavy Bourbon and oak mixed well with chocolate, a slight roast, flowery, with caramel. Pretty heavy on the Bourbon. Not bad though.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by Brad at Jackie O’s. Darkest brown to black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of booze, chocolate and roast. Malty and chocolatey flavor with heavy bourbon before a roasty and boozy finish. Could use some time to mellow, but pretty tasty now too.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, first batch from either 07 or 08. Pours flattish brown with no head or lace. Notes were bitter as fuck, soy, roasted malt, bourbon, dark choc and toffee. Soft carbonation with a full mouthfeel. I think this one had too much soy, def on its way out.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle to oversized snifter, dont know which vintage. smells of vanilla and dark roasty malts, hints of barrel on the backend. pours a black as night abyss with a small amount of chocolate milk looking head that quickly disappeared. tastes of roast and bourbon and chocolate and vanilla and alcohol at the finish. the body is nicely rich and slightly chewy and some heat from the 15.5 % on the finish. overall this is pretty epic and much better than almost any bcbs that ive had. this kills .

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
2008 bottling - Black pour, light carbonation, lacing is light. Nose is only slightly boozy, wood is prevelent, light on the vanilla. Very light mouthfeel, not viscous at all. Bitterness rips the outside edge with a minor amount of oxidation. Sweetness from bourbon is non-existent, any BA flavors are all but gone, finish stops 3/4 of the palate, very short. ABV of 15.5% has leveled off to a water-like level. FINAL: 6/20 Appearance is average and the heat from the booze has disapated, however it came at the cost of the rich vanilla and chocolate flavors that the bourbon used to showoff. While this is not a drain pour, I would say that this had peaked 6-8 months ago, and would have had only another 3 months before drain pour would have been the option.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle, no wax, i believe this is the 2011 edition. pours a silky, somewhat thick, black capped by a razor thin, beige head that leaves slivers of lace on the glass. aroma is excellent with heavy notes of cocoa, toasted graham cracker, dark chocolate, and roasted malts backed by charred oak, bourbon, vanilla ice cream, and figs with a hint of toffee as it warms. flavor is delicious as well with heavy dark chocolate, mocha coffee, roasted malts, and vanilla up front backed by rich, smokey, toasted oak, toffee, bourbon, and dried fruits with sweet notes of coconut and angel’s food cake emerging just ahead of the spicy, bourbon finish. palate is full bodied and richer than expected for such high abv with a lingering finish of dark chocolate, oak, and warming bourbon. overall, i was pleasantly surprised by this beer. it’s a bourbon bomb for sure but i think a year of aging has served it well and brought out the sweetness and roast to balance the bourbon heat. nice beer.
