Poured almost black with a loose khaki head. An alcohol roasted malt flavor with a touch of chocolate make the nose. The palate consists of heavily roasted mouth sweetness and the sting of alcohol. The finish is rich and smooth.

Transfer from BA review on 10-31-12- Served on cask in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a tiny white film of a head. The film faded relatively quickly yielding to little lacing. Smell- The smell is largest of a chocolate and a roasted malt aroma. Mixed with this is a lighter sweet smell of caramel as well as some notes of a nutty nature. Taste – The taste begins with flavors of a roasted and nutty nature. The nutty and roasty flavor are a backbone of the beer which maintain their strength throughout the taste. With these flavors is a lighter caramel sweetness up front. More toward the middle of the taste chocolate flavors begin to come to the tongue. While this occurs the caramel gets stronger and a lighter herbal hop flavor come to the tongue. These flavors take the taste to the end where a light, but quite noticeable, alcohol flavor comes to the tongue. In the end they leave a very nice darker and warming flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather average in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather light (not surprising for a cask). The lower carbonation is quite nice for the flavors, although a bit more creaminess of body may have been better for the darker flavors of the brew. Overall – A rather enjoyable brew. One to try if the chance arises as it has a nice flavor profile and just the right amount of booziness to give it a nice warming feel but yet maintain great drinkability.

On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: Semi-hazy mahogany/chestnut hue with a foamy tan head.
Aroma: The aroma comes off prominently roasty and cocoa initially, but it’s mellow, not overly pungent. There’s a hint of oxidation that isn’t necessarily unpleasant, slightly grapey. Lastly I pick up a very slight hint of orange but only after reading the description.
Taste: Nicely balanced between roast, chocolate and caramel with the grape oxidation flavors present with a hint of cardboard on the finish. It’s not unpleasant, but it would be much better without it.
Palate: A bit like juice with a hint of carbonation.
Overall: I’d really like to try this properly carbonated without the oxidation, I bet it’s pretty killer.

On tap at the brewpub, served in a tasting glass. Pours hazy hazelnut With a small white head that fades to a thin rim of bubbles. The nose has toasty, biscuity, chocolatey malts with piney hops and subtle smoke. The flavour is mildly dry with roasty malts dominating. These provide caramel, chocolate, earth and a touch of subtle smoke. Herbal notes come through in the middle and it closes out with a long, malty finish. On the palate it is light-medium in body with a dryish texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a decent brown ale but not terribly complex. 2014-04-26

Brown Ale, sound boring... Well that's usually because it is... Until you drink voodoos Big Brown Betty and you realize, this is why everyone try's to make a brown ale! It just happens that most people fail miserably. In my experience the flavor of BBB does vary a bit batch to batch but it never disappoints and when it's on, it is simply transcendent

The beer pours decently with a nice reddish brown hue that passes through very little light, has a one finger brown head that disappates somewhat quickly, and minimal lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with chocolate malts up front followed by a blended hoppy scent. The beer tastes great with a nice malted/hoppy flavor that gives away to a chocolate malt finish. The mouthfeel is great as the beer is carbonated very well and leaves you somewhat clean. Overall, a decent brown ale that appeals a chocolate lovers palate.
