3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 SoLan (1550) - Florida, USA - FEB 28, 2006
Hazy gold. Lively carbonation forms a soda like white head that quickly disappears. Very crisp aroma of coriander, orange peel, wheat, and subtle yeast. Flavors are herbal, grainy bitterness balanced by fresh, citrus sweetness with a touch of yeast. Light/medium body, well carbonated. Very nice witbier.

Pours a hazy brownish orange with a very small bubbly white head that went away almost instantly. Aroma of orange, Belgian spices, yeast, caramel, candy sugars, grainy malt and plums. Flavors of the same with a bit more yeast and some lemon.

(330 ml bottle: $3.29 at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) One sniff of this beer and talk about the unexpected throwing me for a loop. I had to read the label to verify the list of spices, which consists of coriander and orange peel. The tart fruitiness, what I identify as the combination of apricot nectar, mandarine and lemon, dominates the nose and isn’t close to what I was expecting. Nevertheless, it smells great. And even in the flavor, I’m getting that same tangy, fruity concoction, but the tartness seems amplified and it’s very acidic on the palate and tightens up my jaw muscles a bit. Orange peel is quite possible, but I’m not really getting any bitterness, only tanginess. No clue where the coriander could be hiding, though. Light bodied and amply carbonated, it’s very clean and refreshing. Golden-orange in color and fairly cloudy in appearance, but the tall and fizzy head dissipates rather quickly. Not at all what I expected from a Belgian ale with coriander and orange peel, but it’s very tasty, more like a fruit juice than beer to me. And if this were fruit juice, I could drink it all day.

An interesting wit...the aroma explodes with citrus being dominant. As others have said, the taste is very sour. My bottle actually had rust and something coagulated around the lip so maybe I got a bad bottle. Not too impressive overall.

Pours cloudy orange, solid white head. Aroma is salty, vegetables, light sourness. Taste is overly sour, almost tastes spolied. Light bitterness. Hints of spiciness. Doesn’t come together as a wit.

Has a lightly sulfer, sour aroma and hints at rancid grains. The body a pale white tinted yellow and holds a diminishing, two finger thick, white head. Fresh citrus tasting fore, followed by mild spice, lemon, some almost acidic/lactic notes. Better than I remember it being, but still not one I’m crazy about.

Has an almost sea breeze aroma with salt and vegetal notes. Cloudy yellow in color with a thin white head. Taste is way over ripe oranges, yeast and again something vaguely salty or gamy. Flavor is very off putting...it’s almost right it just has that almost rotten note that kills the experience.

[Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil]
Brownish yellow with little head and cloudy. Buttery lemony orange with a little bit of corriander and plenty of sweet malt. Maybe some banana in there somewhere. Sweet and sour banana flavour with a candy/oxidized flavour and not very complex. Quite a bit fruity--nectarine? Medium body with moderated carbonation and tangy.
