Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings. ----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Bottle, 500ml, fresh (purchased in Prague and drank within a week of purchase)
The look: Clear golden body with an initially large white head
To me a typical Czech Světlý 12° and above is: Well malted body with plenty of biscuits and cereals. Sweetness level is in the light-medium range with some honey flavours and a light caramel presence (3/4 honey, 1/4 caramel). Fruity flavour limited to a light citrus flavour. Medium carbonation. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with a light citric touch. After-taste of dry grassy/herbal hops with a light dry spiciness character.
This one: Pretty much as above except with a bit more biscuit and a little soapy. An excellent example of the style. Far from the best Czech Pils I had on tap this is nonetheless the best Czech Pils I had in a bottle. joss (3076), Garching b. München, Germany Jan 30, 2008 Bottle, thanks pivnizub! Very pleasant hop aroma - grass, citrus, light pine. Deep golden, light carbonation, big offwhite head.
Solid fruity base with a good wallop hops to balance - bitter start making way to the lighter perfumed and citric notes. Elegant sparkly mouthfeel. Resiny finish. Now this is a (strong) pilsner!
