RCL (855), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Mar 29, 2008 Super light on hops for a "Double IPA." Quite malty and rather sweet. Not bad, just not much interesting going on.
JugOPunch (71), leominster, Massachusetts, USA Apr 25, 2008 I can’t call this a IIPA it just doesn’t fit and would doom this beer to complete failure anyway. The label says a "big pale ale" which is closer to the truth but relative to other "big" beers doesn’t fit either. Nevertheless, I really had to dig for the aroma. A malty and slightly citrus mellowness. The flavor is malty almost dirty with a mild hop bitterness. This brewery has always struck me as one that never wanted to step too far out on a limb flavorwise and this beer falls in lock step with that philosophy. It does enough to be recognized as craft beer but never does anything particularly distinct. The body and mouthfeel are the only facet of this brew that can carry the tag of a bigger beer. It is a medium to full body with a creamy quite luscious mouthfeel.
It is definitely east coast with no signs of the hop aggression of a prototypical west coast IPA/APA, which depending on your tastes may or may not be appealing. Overall, this is more of a "big" sessionable pale ale that is pleasing but not particularly memorable. hopdog (4196), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2008 12oz bottle. Poured a medium and clear amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of toasted malts, citrus and some fruitiness. Tastes of toasted malts and citrus. Alcohol content well hidden. Nothing really ’stood out’. cfranz (261), Acton, Massachusetts, USA Apr 16, 2008 Not a bad session beer - have had this on tap a bunch of times, first time I have seen it in a bottle. jason (1402), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 8, 2008 Updated: Apr 9, 2008Bottle. I’m not going to rate this according to style like some others on here have, just for what it is: a beer. So I walk into a local beer store to find a specific Saison I was looking to enjoy during dinner and I spot this. Labled as an "Big Pale Ale" it sparked my interest, especially for $6.99 for a six pack. Poured a deep golden amber color with nice head. Aroma is light citrus and malt. Flavor is a very light amount of hops, light citrusy lemon and a really nice sweet malty body; something alot of IIPA’s lack. Mouthfeel is spot on - very low alocohol taste and very quaffable. More like a session IIPA. ukoolaid (559), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA Apr 3, 2008 Updated: Apr 4, 2008Bottle. Pours a clear amber brown. Aroma is toasted malts. Medium palate with bready malts and light hops. Very drinkable.
