Volgon (2458), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jun 30, 2004 Art of Beer Festival ’04: Cloudy orange with a small white head. Spruce/resiny aroma, syrupy texture. Starts of bitter and ends very bitter. Raw tasting and in your face. EithCubes (1796), Indiana, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle. Big citrus nose with a secondary, but still strong, wave of piny resin. Big murky malt base also apparent. Virtually no carbonation in a hazy orange body, lacing and very creamy, rocky beige pour. Taste is bitter but controlled, stronger notes of fruit and citrus with lovely caramel malt and some pine sweeping underneath. Light-medium, quaffable body, smooth and creamy with just a touch of alcohol showing. Very light earthiness and chewy toast, which is about the only thing showing in the after. Probably the mildest double IPA I’ve found, and perhaps the most tilted toward the malt side (I’d actually feel comfortable scaling this down to a regular IPA for style considerations, or even a strongish English Pale), but also one of the most drinkable. This is just great beer. All told, highly underrated. kestrel9000 (2), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA does not count May 17, 2008 I really, really like this.
I see why one commentor hesitates to call this an IPA, but I see it as one. I’ll just point out where my perceptions differ from some of the other comments I read.
I like ’em real hoppy and this one measures up.
I do think it has a dscernible alcohol taste but it doesn’t ruin it.
A nice bitter clean finish, but that malty-and-something-else on the front end gives it a mild cloyingness almost like a barleywine.
Still, though, overall, I find this beer yummy.
Ignore my aroma number. I have no sense of smell. RblWthACoz (959), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 2, 2008 Pours an almost clear amber brown. Flavor is slight hops, but overall smooth and easy. Leaves a fairly lasting bitterness for an aftertaste. Feel is good. Drinkable indeed. A smooth and even brew that goes down as it should. OldGrowth (1269), Cary, North Carolina, USA May 31, 2004 On tap @ the Horseshoe pub in Hudson Ma. Good nose, honey, pineapple, pine, nutty nose. Nice clear orange copper color. Small head. Bittersweet flavors. orange, grapefruit, rindy, litely burnt. A toasty, nutty malt backgound, well more than background but not enough to balance. Oily, creamy, smooth, texture with a sweet bitter finish. A little warming. Very nice imperial. Maybe not a monsta, but a winner from the crew at Wachusett. The Horseshoe is one of the best places to try Wachusett products.
