3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 hockeybeerguy (212) - Portland, Maine, USA - JAN 25, 2013
It pours a light amber in color and has some visible carbonation seen rising in my nonic. A nice fluffy one inch white foamy head appears and lasts for about a minute before slowly dieing. The smell has some light aromas of caramel with some light spice as well. The taste is slightly sweet ranging closer to some light bitterness from the Christmas spices. The palate is medium centering on a moderate amount of carbonation on the tongue. This is fairly drinkable. It leaves a bland aftertaste. Overall, I’m not really impressed with this one, but for the style, I’d say just average.

Not much going on in this winter ale. I have a few others I would buy again before this one. Not enough going on in this beer to comment specifically.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Scrapersnbeer (980) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 3, 2012
A smooth malty nose with a hint of smoke. Medium amber color - when one pictures strong English beer this isn’t it. Could be a bitter or even a pale. Tastes, however, are the roasted malt and bitter bankground that define the style. Not enough sweetness to be Scotch ale; English classification is correct. An easy enough drinking beer with a medium body. Just out of the session range.

Malty sweet. Thick and heavy with a lot of flavor. I wish it had even more alcohol to match the rich taste. Would be great with very sharp pungent cheeses or savory meats.

I like that this winter beer doesn’t try too hard, it’s just a hearty take on scotch ale that doesn’t go crazy, just gives you that malty, maybe very slightly smoky, satisfying beer for a winter evening, and gives you something at a reasonable ABV.

A good enjoyable beer. It has some earthy tones and a deep amber color. Enjoy.

From tap at Sunset Grill. Pours clear and golden orange with a small, creamy and white head. Aroma is mild fruity and slight malty to caramelish. Roasted malty and slight caramelish flavoured. Light bitter and medium dry finish.

Draft. Orangey amber with a medium off white head. Aroma and flavor: lots of caramel, some raisins and cherry, spicy hops. Good English ale, but not particularly wintry.

What I expected from their winter offering, pours a nice frothy foam that shrinks down to lace the top of the glass, looks appetizing, taste is good, malty, hoppy and bitter at the end, spiced, doesn’t jump out and grab you as much as I would like, reminds me of a mellowed out SN Celebration Ale, which much less hop. I bought a 12 pack, although I am not disappointed because it is very drinkable, I think this is a little above average and is not as distinct as I would have though.
