I normally go into Wadworth’s Goat & Tricycle in Bournemouth and become quickly underwhelmed at how a pub with something like 12 handpumps can serve such a homogenous range of products (low or moderate strength golden ales or brown bitters to a man + zero of interest in bottles) - the prime culprits being Wadworth’s standard range; today, however, was different - a 7.1% stout!; this was black, with ruby hints; it had a lovely aroma of roasted malts and dark fruit; it tasted dry and sweet, with stewed dark fruits - raisins, cherries, blackberries; some liqourice; it had a vinuous, almost port-like feel; there was a touch of coffee in the super-dry finish; it was complex and very good indeed - if this is an example of a traditional family brewer upping their game then bring it on; I hope this comes back next January at the very least (and that it’s better advertised than it appears to have been - not a mention on the Wadworth website, for example - it was only the pub’s tweet which alerted me to this absolute beauty).
