1.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Pint in the The Boot Inn, Berwick St James, Wiltshire. When I arrived at the bar and asked what was fresh, only to get a puzzled look from the bar girl, I knew I was in trouble, even though this is a CAMRA pub. This is clear chestnut brown. I won’t bother to get into too many details suffice to say this is dull brown twig water. Watery, caramel, crystal malt, smidgen of dry earthy English hop and tangy hop on the finish. I left two thirds of it on the table and left.

1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
I had a pint in a pub. I found it bland with not much in the way of taste at all, a bit sweet and very mildly bitter. Drinkable but bland.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask @ Cricketers Arms, Bedford. Noncommittal golden brown, decent full white head. Light aroma. Bit of malt and citrus notes with sulphur astringency. Taste takes a while to kick in, a decent sour bitterness followed by a bittersweet hoppy aftertaste. Good but not too distinct from other low strength bitters (it goes without saying that this is not an IPA).

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Now 3.5%ABV: hand-pulled half-pint at the 34th Telford Beer Festival (Crown Inn, Oakengates) on 4 May 2013.
Clear amber/golden body with a thin white head of bubbles on top.
Malty for an IPA, in both the nose and mouth with just a hint of floral hops to stop it being an overly sweet smelling and tasting beer.
Biscuit/bread more than sweeter molasses, the beer having a pleasant semi-bitter feel throughout. An ideal starter, it set my taste buds up nicely for the Mild and dark beer attack I was about to begin.
