COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Brewed in honour of John Cairns Bartholomew, grandson of the Brewery's co-founder.
A deep amber, robust but perfectly balanced traditional English ale with a rich malty body, complex hop character and a hint of tropical fruit in the aroma and taste. A gentle 'boiled sweet/barley sugar' sweetness blends wonderfully with a smooth nutty malt and rounded hop bitterness before a dry, biscuity, moreishly bitter finish. JCB is matured for seven days in the brewery, prior to despatch.
JCB is brewed from 90% pale and unusually high (10%) rates of crystal malt. Substantial quantities of traditional English aroma Fuggles hops (50%) and Goldings hops (50%) are added both at the start and near the end of the boil to give bitterness units of 35. A 'tea' of Goldings hops infused in hot water is added as the copper casts, further enhancing the hop character. Colour rating is 38.

Thin foam over a copper color ale. Some hop aroma and a fruity hop taste. Realy fresh summer beer with a thin body that enables you to drink large amounts of this beer.

[Cask at Sweeney & Todd’s Pie Shop, Reading] Amber with a small white head. Slight carbonation. Smells like a farmyard (so it’s a true Waddy’s, then!). A spicy hop tingle at first with biscuity overtones. This is soon ovetaken by more farmyard, before sweet malt and autumn fruit arrives. There’s some sweetness in there, but nicely balanced against a robust bitterness in the finish. Not a bad ale, and certainly far better than the insipid bottled version.

Handpump at The Square Peg, Birmingham. Copper colour with a small head. Malty scent. In the mouth, there are lots of summer berry fruits, with some hoppiness. Perhaps a bit too sweet.

Half pint pulled at The Turf Tavern, a clear darkish amber witha think white frothy head. The aroma is malty while a good combination of malt and hops produces flowery flavours. Smooth mouthfeel at the front with a sweetish tart finish.
