COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle - filtered. Released by Wadworth in August 2005.
Previously known as Usher’s Bishop’s Tipple at 5.5%. Moved back to original ABV (6.5%) and recipe when Wadworth acquired the brand. However, the ABV has since been reduced to 5.5%, in line with the cask version.

The Bishop’s Tipple has been a legend amongst ale drinkers since it was first brewed in 1973 to celebrate the inauguration of George Reindorp as Bishop of Salisbury. It always was deceptively drinkable for a higher strength beer, tasting both complex and delicate at the same time; now our head brewer, Trevor Holmes, has spiced it up a little to make it even more lusciously aromatic - a crisp, turbo-hopped brew with wonderful citrus flavours, a real beer to savour.
Wadworth Bishop’s Tipple is a pale gold beer, brewed from low colour Optic barley with a small proportion of cane sugar added to give it a smooth, easy drinking palate. The beer was fermented at low temperature with a special yeast, carefully chosen to avoid the fruity ester flavours often associated with higher alcohol beers.
The two hops used are the classic low acidity Saaz variety from Bohemia, a vital ingredient in many Czech lagers and renowned for its delicate peppery bitterness; and an equal portion by bitterness strength of Styrian Goldings hops, which contribute a smooth, rich bitterness underpinned by a spicy citrus finish. One third of the hop grist is reserved for a late infusion, so as to extract and enhance the aromatic hop oils in the brew.

Once Gibbs Mews, then when that went pear-shaped Ushers came in and now it’s kept alive by the good folk at Wadworth’s. Why!?! From the bottle into a pint at just on cool. Bright medium gold with a lasting puffy white head that left some good legs. Aroma of ripe gooseberries, forest-floor dew and dank cellar, not very enticing. Fruity and malty sweet palate with a fair balance of tangy marmalade and dryish, stale hops and toasted grains. Finish is mildly warming with the alcohol pronounced and shows more toasted malt and layers of sweet fruit. Body is barely past light and the carbonation is too charged for pleasure. Overall there is nothing wrong with this one, it just doesn’t excite. (50cL, 28/02/07, Horsted Keynes general store, Sussex)

Golden colour with a small, fully diminishing white head. Relatively stong but simplistic bitter taste with a long lasting finish and silky texture. Pretty ordinary.

Bright gold with a white head. Sweet fruity aroma, perhaps some pear. The taste somehow doesn’t do justice to the attractive appearance and aroma. Rather artificial citric taste; bitter but not my favourite type of bitterness; very alcoholic. The way this is put together just doesn’t feel right.

Bottle picked up at off Licence in Wareham 22-06-06. Dark Golden colour, small white head, some hops in what is a sweetish aroma, littlle bit dissapointed in the taste though, bitterness lingers a little some hops but overall fell a little short of being a decent bitter.

bluevegie (3004) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUN 22, 2006
Bright and clear, sunburnt copper body with an average size white head. Aroma is mainly of hops with some toffee malts floating in and out. Taste is not that flash, easily drinkable although, just probably wouldn’t have too many in a row, thin body, citrus, traces of caramel and a touch of sweetness on the finish.

Dutch Ratebeer Gathering. Clear copper coloured. Aroma of hops and... i don’t know, glue or something, very odd. Same thing in flavour. Really disliked this one.

6th Dutch Ratebeer Gathering. Aroma was too sweet, some spices and a bit hoppy. It’s not enjoyable, not exciting enough. Too clean for me.

Bottled. The aroma wasn’t too bad, even quite interesting, but the flavors are disappointing. Bit woody aroma with apple and pear. Golden/amber color, off-white head, fair lace. Light sweet, light malty, hops, (too) bitter finish, floral. Quite clean actually, unlike most good English beers.

6th Dutch Ratebeer Gathering. Dusty, siruppy and a bit wood-like aroma. Clear, copper coloured, with a thin, white head. Taste is bitter, woodish, flowery and with some extracts of bishops armpits.
